Which of these directors under age 50...is your favourite?
IMDB ran this poll a few days ago, the full title of which was: Which of these directors, who are under age 50 and have at least two films in the IMDb Top 250, is your favorite?
I almost never look at their polls, but I found this one intriguing and the results really shocked me. According to the average movie-goer -- and that is what IMDB represents, the average movie-goer in every sense of the word average -- PTA and Aronofsky only account for about 10% of the vote combined. I thought this was an absurd result and I figured I would throw it up to the generally more sophisticated viewers over at JoBlo to see if the results are as different as I want them to be, or if this is just how genuinely people feel. |

To me, Ritchie doesn't belong with these other guys. Don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed some of Ritchie's work (most notably Snatch and the Sherlock Holmes flicks) but IMO he's just not even close to being in the same league as the other five. |

Why wouldn't they belong on the list? The criteria for selection in the IMDB poll was having two separate films on the Top 250. This strikes me as fair since the choices in the poll weren't random, but simply the outcome of a previously designed question. It's only once you start stacking them up in a poll like this that you can see who 'belongs'. According to the IMDB users PTA doesn't. |

They're Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, and Snatch. So, y'know, pretty much the same movie.

Nolan - I've never seen The Following. Memento and Insomnia were pretty damn enjoyable. The Batman films, The Prestige, and Inception were nothing bad, but nothing special to me.
Tarantino - Pulp Fiction was cool. Reservoir Dogs was well done. Jackie Brown wasn't as good. And the films since were terrible. Fincher - I don't like most of his work. Zodiac was alright, but not a film I get much replay value out of. Se7en is beautifully made, but so predictable. Alien3 was fun, but overshadowed by the previous superior Alien films. PTA - Boogie Nights was alright. There Will Be Blood is his only one I would call great. Although it must be said that film was incredible. And I do look forward to his future works. Aronofsky - I'm not a fan of any of his films, nor am I interested in the upcomming Noah film. Ritchie - Snatch was good. Lock Stock was alright, amazing when I first saw it, but on repeated viewings i'v become less a fan of it. The rest is a mess. He seems to have burned out. So which of them is my favourite? its between Nolan and PTA. |

I wish it were grittier, gritty like Taxi Driver. I would've much prefered that tone and simply having the Nazi hunters as the sole storyline, following their journey and witnessing Nazi atrocities along the way. An adventure-thriller a bit like a WW2 Apocalypse Now.
The Tarantino film gave me some inspiration, but I found the overall film to be a mess with too many storylines, and the tone was too cartoonish. |

^ wait for Dark Knight Rises before saying that...for all we know, he could just be building up to make a 3-hour long "screw you" :P
Aranofsky FTW |

Tarantino vs PTA top 3 in my top 1,000
Pulp Fiction #10 There Will Be Blood # 167 Reservoir Dogs #173 Inglorious Basterds #293 Boogie Nights #419 Magnolia #533 So QT with an AVG ranking of 158 & PTA with an AVG ranking of 373. Not to mention the rest on my top 1,000 being QT Kill Bill Vol 1. #586 Kill Bill Vol 2. #812 Jackie Brown #894 Grinhouse #912 (although only half QT gets credit.) & Punch Drunk Love & Hard Eight missing out of my top 1,000 makes this a slam dunk for me. If PTA comes out with 2 more films slightly better than There Will Be Blood then there might be some competition but right now QT is a clear choice. |

1. Tarantino
2. Fincher 3. Nolan 4. Ritchie 5. Aronofsky I haven't seen any PTA films aside from a little bit of PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE so I don't feel comfortable giving him a spot on the list. Aronfsky is really overrated. THE WRESTLER and BLACK SWAN are excellent, but THE FOUNTAIN is mediocre and PI is a total piece of shit. Last edited by magjournal; 05-01-2012 at 11:38 AM.. |
