I felt like Dexter hasn't been even average television since the Trinity Killer (honestly, that arc was phenomenal storytelling and Dexter will NEVER be able to top it) but with Deb finally seeing Dexter kill, I was committed to tuning in this season. I felt last season they were really grasping at straws until the final moment.
Overall, solid premiere and this season looks to be solid but I am certainly going to keep my expectations in check. This show has burned me too much over the last couple of seasons. But so far, I chalk this season up as 1 for 1. |

omg omg omg !!!!! I had to take a "1 day to think about it break" before commenting
Season 6 was THE biggest cliffhanger ever and i was worried. As a fanboy , season 4 with the Trinity Killer was the best ( mostly because John Lithgow was awesome) and yes season 5-6 were downers but the show still remained entertaining in a sick way ( Lumen was a nice addition in S5 , best kill scenes in S6 ). But Episode 1 of Season 7 ? I don't know where to start. So i'll start with my gold star : Debbie ..... she could have been written as a dumb fuck so the writers could take the easy way out but no and i think season 7 will draw the spotlight on her more than ever. Gotta give prop to Jennifer Carpenter for bringing her A game. The church scene where she wants to call for back-up but Dexter says no and her hand starts shaking was dramatic gold. While the season 6 cliffhanger was skaten throught in 15 minutes , i like the way Debbie keeps putting pressure on Dexter. Episode 1 finale doesn't look like a Dexter's dream from the "next episode" preview which is good .... push it , push it really good Frankenfuckshit !!! Dexter is still keeping it tight but you can see his world crumbling. It's clear that he will never harm Debbie ( well the show would jump the shark if he ever did ). But for the first time , you can feel him losing control and making impulsive decision. His cop out was not that easy and it's not over. Having re-watched Lie To Me lately , you can notice he is not as stonecold as before .... rubbing hands , touching forehead and avoiding eyes when questionned. The narrative track. Narration is an easy tool when you make a movie or a tv series but Dexter got it right. Since the character is an intelligent psychopath , it helps make sense between action and thought. After 7 seasons , one would think it would be easy to rely on it but the writers always use it wisely , never overreaching. Scenario-wise , Season 6 was the biggest cliffhanger like i said and i was afraid the series would surf the wave without actually diving in. Nope ... looks like season 7 is Dexter vs Debbie à la Homeland. They didn't try to ret-con what Debbie saw and while she went along unwillingly in the church , it's not over. Of course , there's a new serial killer but i don't think that will be the main point of the season ... actually 2 killers if you count Batista's daughter boyfriend ( but i'm not sure where they are going with that one yet ) Overall , this episode was better than i expected .... Dexter got a lot of pressure to keep afloat and not just from Debbie. LaGuerta is working her angle too. My biggest FU is not related to episode 1 but to the season 7 trailer : did they have to spoil Masuka's fate ? 10/10 .... i'm a fanboy but i never gave that note since season 4 |

As a fanboy of the concept , season 7 is only great because season 5-6 were average ..... can't garantee your "just back in" satisfaction. I don't want to jump the shark tho .... i'll wait around 5-6 episode to make a clear judgement |

Pivotal moment between Dex & Deb...I expected better! This series has seen better days! Their conversations in the first two episodes should have comprised the opening show without all the subplots!

I was not shocked or anything.. It all felt a bit rushed. In fact, what I saw was an orgy of story lines.

Honestly I wasn't! I mean, at the end of the season 6 it was pretty much clear that the jig was up for Dexter. I really couldn't find a storyline where she would believe otherwise. AND, and this is the biggest one: Deb is a damn good cop with a cop-heart. I always knew she would figure it out eventually.. And just a quick prediction: this could actually 'kill' Deb, but in what manner, we will have to wait and see. But like I said: an ORGY of storyline; LaGuerta finding the bloodsample and making the link to Dokes (who was always my favorite character!!), Dex and Deb, Quinn on the loose, Matsuka's creepy assistant, the hand, and more.. Gonna watch the second ep now.. I'm actually travelling and will watch it with 75 people around me at some gate in Washington.. This will be an interesting experience.. ![]() |

A little late for the adaptation maybe, but I can see the whole Dexter/Deb/LaGuerta collision course being built up to an ending that hews close to the original Lindsay novel. To leave it there without major spoilers, of course.
Just a hunch. |

It's kinda hard to judge where the show's at right now. I intended to comment on whatever I was thinking when I finished watching this week's ep, but I don't seem to have much to say. It feels like we're in the middle of everything right now. It struck me a couple times that Dexter and Deb both have settled into this new arrangement a little too quickly, but maybe that's just me being harsh on the show. Dexter has never really been big on nuance, so this straight-forward approach is to be expected.
The biggest thing I took out of this week was my appreciation for Deb. On paper, she is the kind of woman that I don't care to watch, and kinda dislike. But in practice, when watching her, it's impossible not to love her. That moment when she tells him "I still believe there's good in you," oh my god I would have melted if I were Dexter. What Jennifer Carpenter has done with that role is remarkable. |

Well said. I was thinking about this 'Deb-as-a-character-on-paper' thing as well, and remember caring less for her in the first few seasons. But damn, since she got shot with Frank she totally wheeled me in.

DEXTER-SEASON SEVEN: Although the post-Doomsday killing confrontations between Dexter & Debra (the phenomenal Michael C. Hall & Jennifer Carpenter, both who deserve long overdue Emmys!) which exposed Dexter’s secret life as a vigilante serial killer should have been the entire primary focus of the season premiere instead of playing out lazily over the first two episodes, the (hopefully) lucky 7th year of this truly inspired horror series finally kicked into high gear as several interesting, interconnected storylines played out seamlessly since: the highway shooting death of Chicago detective Mike Anderson (Billy Brown), pitting Miami Metro Homicide against surprisingly cool, slick, smooth Ukrainian mobsters George Novikov (Jason Gedrick), the manager of a high-class strip club & crime boss Isaac Sirko (Ray Stevenson, this season’s primary villain), whose enforcer Viktor (Enver Gjokaj) was Mike’s shooter & subsequently murdered by Dexter. In other subplots which thankfully don’t involve any political angles like in seasons past: Quinn romances hot blonde bombshell Nadia (Katia Winter), an exotic dancer at Sirko’s nightclub; Capt. LaGuerta (Lauren Velez) reopens the Bay Harbor Butcher case in the wake of the Doomsday killings after finding one of Dexter’s blood slides at the scene of the crime; Dexter engages in a cat-and-mouse game with lab tech geek Louis (Josh Cooke), who is suspicious of Dexter’s involvement in the Ice Truck Murders from Season 1; and Dexter’s strange camaraderie with a former Bonnie & Clyde duo…suicidal convict Wayne Randall (Daniel Buran) and his young paramour Hannah McKay (Yvonne Strahovski, another sexy blonde in the Hitchcock tradition). But this is Hall & Carpenter’s show from start-to-finish! The psychological pathology between Dex & Deb make them the most interesting dysfunctional siblings on television! My grade for Season 7 so far: A-

Solid episode last night, with some really good moments. The show made a really good decision bringing us here, watching Dexter and Deb have to coexist on the same wavelength. I think when Dexter is over a lot of people will say it never got past season four, but everything being so radically different this season may lead to its redemption. It will never be that good again, clearly, but with what's going on now it has room to be good in a whole other way.
Redefining their relationship entirely makes it play like something brand new, almost. The "will you be mine?" scene does something that I don't think we've seen done yet, by stepping outside of Dexter's narrative and presenting him as an almost sinister entity. It was brief, but effective. I also really loved his line "everything is in my control." In fact that whole conversation with Deb in the parking lot was outstanding, so was their other one in the alley. Just Dexter saying "I love you" is a loaded moment now, as is just about every other one they're together in. Dex's yelling of "fuuuck!" while taunting Speltzer was great. Also his acknowledging that that character, and everything that happened involving him, was basically a plot device to further his relationship with Deb. Burning the slides, that shot where he's watching the smoke, the whole last sequence was really good (until the unbelievably bad final line, where I was literally thinking "don't say human, please don't say human" and then he did). There seem to be things going on underneath, beyond just the blunt force trauma of Dexter's monologues, and this ep felt like the season catching its stride imo. I hope it can keep it. |

I find myself to be just about over this show, completely. I was really jazzed up after the season premiere but I notice I surf the internet or text or what have you, more and more during each new episode. I'm not interested in the villain, I'm not interested in Deb, I feel as though they are going to push the Freudian angle more, and I just don't see how Dexter hasn't been turned in yet. It doesn't fit her character to be so OK with it.
Of course, Michael C Hall still and continuously kills it as Dexter and is the only reason worth watching. |

She is not OK with it but this is a good example of a dilemna.
She is not OK with the whole thing , her job as a police detective and now captain would be to turn him in but her stance as a sister is to understand , convince and protect her brother. Let's forget the killing for a sec and instead imagine theft. Personally , if my brother or a family member would rob grocery store at gunpoint to pay for his meth addiction and killed a couple person on the way , i would surely turn him in but if he was Robin Hood and just stealing from the rich while giving back to the community and the only ones dying brought it upon themselves , i'd probably protect that person too. Not sure if this is a good example but that's the only one i came up with. Dexter made it clear to her he only kills certain kind of person and the whole Bullhead killer situation just exacerbated his point. Deb problably would not have been so understanding if that situation didn't happen at the same time but that is TV drama convenience at its best. |

Certain kinds of people or not, he is now a known serial killer with a huge list of murders on his hands. Not to mention, his actions have led to the deaths of innocent people which is now, also, known to Deb. He creates destruction that directly effects Deb everywhere she goes. She has gone through living hell because of Dexter and she now knows it's ALL because of him. All of the trauma that Deb has gone through in 8 seasons has been because of Dexter. She almost got killed, the love of her life did get killed, she found out Dexter almost killed her, Deb knows Dexter's actions directly led to the murder of her nephew's mother, and Christ, the list goes on. Not to mention her built up over the seasons belief in her job and her dedication to the law and doing it the right away. She's a cop's cop.
So all of this is now in the air, right out in the open, in front of her face. There is no way her character doesn't turn him in if this was projected to real life. Oh, let's throw in the fact that Dexter has revealed to her that her own father has been lying to her since she was a child. Deb has all ready shown she is an emotionally unstable person and when extremely flustered she acts wildly and with abandon. But now, her whole life has basically been exposed as a lie and a world of torture and living hell and it's all because of Dexter...and she thinks logically about all of this going on now? She reacts calm and coolly. Bull. Fucking. Shit. Don't buy it. |

mmmm not sure where the Hannah-Dexter storyline is going but ..... sex scene FTW hehe . Damn you MCH ... we saw the back/side boob but he got full glory view!
I think the main reason i like this season so much is the fact that it's not the usual "main serial killer" story. So much different arc mixed together. |

I've hated the character since the first season. So unbelievable as a cop and now even more so in this season. She "chews the scenery" which I always wondered what that phrase meant and now I see a perfect example. She has the body of an anorexic boy and, yes, that's more the "actress" than the "character" BUT I've never cared for the actress when I've seen her in other things.
