The Ring - Remake
I just read that Rick Baker has been asked to do the make up effects for the American remake of Ring.
I had heard that a US film company was considering doing a remake but I guess this adds a little more to the realization that it could happen (groan). I really hope they don't fuck this up with trying to find eye candy for the screen, they should just find a group of no name actors and not try to cash in on big name no talent douche bags along with a soundtrack to make it look like 2 hours of eMpTV. I would rather they just get the original released in the US so I could get it on DVD in NTSC format. <END RANT> |

Yeah, I would much rather just watch the original (and it`s sequels). Wouldn`t it be great if they would friggin` release it in the US?

It's kinda weird to get one of the best makeup artists in the buisness for a movie that had no makeup effects at all, isn't it?

What about Sadako's nails, or lack of them. Does anyone know if they hired an actress with no nails for those scenes or is it a very good makeup job.

They pulled her nails for the filming
Just kidding I'm sure it was SFX. As I read the interview with Baker he said there is not much in the way of effects, some corpses and such. |

A remake of any film is a bad idea (apart form some like GODZILLA, they just suck-the fact that it would be an english language film would not make it as freaky)

I think this remake will be interesting, but I doubt it'll top the original.

I bet that they'll make it into a splatterfest and show Sadako actually killing her victims (just so that the majority of the public will go and see it).

Well, interesting certainly... But topping the original, unlikely!
This is just the type of thing that pisses me off about Hollywood! They see it work somewhere else and think they can do a better job, Fuck that... I'm giving the re-make a big miss, wether others like it or not! Damn what a cock up. Is nothing sacred anymore! |

I also hope to God that the "Dawn Of the Dead" remake doesn`t happen.

Hey, I just got some more info on the "Ring" remake from Dark Horizons. Apparently, Steven Speilberg is involved - probably only producing. Dear Lord in heaven, I hope Speilberg doesn`t try to make this some kind of family-friendly crap or something. Also, the remake is going to be called "Static".

Munky, Sadako's face is almost completely covered by her hair and she wears a white nightgown. Oh, and she doesn't have any nails. Haven't you ever seen the infamous shot of her face with one of her eye looking downwards with rage. But its not just the way she looks, she also has a walk that sends shivers down my spine every time I see it. If you live in the UK you can get the legitimate version on video and DVD easily, but anywhere else, you'll probably have to get a bootleg copy.

Steven Spielberg is involved with the project in that it's under the umbrella of Dreamworks SKG.

Just found a big chunk of remake news (I make no clain to how authentic it is, just a cut and paste):
CASTING DECISIONS ANNOUNCED. The lead for the film has fallen to Naomi Watts (top right, recently of Mulholland Drive), who will be playing Rachel Keller, a news reporter at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Entertainment Weekly reports the part was first offered to Jennifer Connelly and Gwyneth Paltrow, with Watts finally beating out Kate Beckinsale for the role. Joining Watts is New Zealander Martin Henderson (Windtalkers) as her photojournalist ex-husband. Variety also lists David Dorfman, Amber Tamblyn, Rachael Bella and Brian Cox (Hannibal Lecter in Manhunter) as appearing in the film, but fails to mention Daveigh Chase (Donnie Darko, bottom right), whose casting was announced in October. Chase's character in the film is still not official, but we have received word that she will be playing a young Sadako, named Samara Morgan in the remake, and had to undergo several hours of pre-production work at Rick Baker's makeup studio for the role. She has apparently shot some of her scenes in Washington, and will rejoin filming once the crew returns to Los Angeles (Thanks to Gr8). As for the other cast members, Cox is rumored to be playing Samara's father, and Tamblyn one of the teenagers to view the cursed videotape. REMAKE NOT TO FILM AS STATIC. Rumors that the remake had changed to this working title were proved groundless thanks to an e-mail from producer Roy Lee, who assured me that, "STATIC is definitely not the title of the movie. The MPAA [has] cleared the title The Ring for release in the U.S." bThe working title appears to have now become simply Ring" |

The girl from Muholland Drive will play Reiko Asakawa (reporter)'s role. I forgot her name. The little girl they got to play Samara/Sadako looks really young. She might just be the younger version. Not sure who's gonna be the teen version. Something about Samara causing the horses to kill themselves is what I heard takes place on her ranch (?). Anyway, I am hyped to see this movie. Even if it is sucky... Can't be as bad as The Ring Virus. Woof.

ya know... jus' to address the whole "Hollywood remake" thing...as I've read more and more about asian cinema it's becoming more obvious to me that we're not so bad over here, in the least they're just as bad as us. Ring has remakes and sequels and television series and all kinds of stuff attached to it overseas, mostly just to cash in on the hype. It's crazy...
Back to the American remake, well I don't mind so much now that I've actually seen the real deal. My biggest worry was that somehow I'd never get to see the original, would settle for seeing the remake and forever be disappointed. But now that I've experienced the genuine article (and it's truly terrific), I say go ahead with your remake guys... do what you have to do... here's the website with reviews for all related Ring issues, don't visit if you don't want spoilers.... http://www.somrux.com/ringworld/index2.htm [This message has been edited by Seph (edited 01-03-2002).] |

More Ring news from Ringworld:
"RING PREVIEW GARNERS POSITIVE FEEDBACK. 19 June, 2002. The Ain't it Cool website has posted the first review of Ring from last night's test screening... and the word is good. Judging by the audience reaction, this could turn out to be a 'Blair Witch' style success story, the article states. It goes on to say, There are some genuinely creepy moments that will convince you to sleep with the light on for a week." "An anonymous source informs us that the Ring trailer has been tentatively set to premiere the first week of August, showing before the Mel Gibson thriller Signs." |

I can't get a copy of the original Japanese version, but I read the script and even though I'm a little skeptical, I'll still be seeing the American version first day.

If you want, I can just make you a copy of the Ring (original Japanese) for ya, Candyman666. It was subtitled by my friend in Australia and it's really good quality. Email me at mahou_fancy_lala@yahoo.com and we can set up a deal.
