EVIL DEAD 2: DEAD BY DAWN - I figured since I watched the original last night I might as well watch the sequel today. I'll be skipping AoD though. That movie just doesn't cut it for me. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

Halloween (theaters)

Oddly enough, this movie's been marketed in Mexico as "Halloween: The Beginning" (that's the title, and the tagline's "Witness the birth of fear").

Wow! What a boring fucking movie! I mean, from the plot, the scares and the kills, it's such a long ass bore! It wastes too much time TRYING to build a 'character' or somesuch (it does fail) out of Michael, and thus the 'real' plot (you know, Laurie's) gets zero screentime. The movie's shot too dark and the shaky cam gave me a headache. So did the awful editing. I did like Sheri Moon's character (and her acting *gasp*), I hated the awful fuck-cunt-shit-ass dialogue courtesy of Zombie. Other than that, great soundtrack, a semi-likable character in Loomis, Laurie and Annie (the whole two seconds she was on screen) and some decent gore. Some and decent. The kills mostly suck balls (surprise from Zombie).

5/10. I'm surprised I didn't like it.

The Legend of Hell House 9/10
Great classic with Roddy McDowall - stays creepy all the way through with plenty of scares (not just "jump" scares, either.)

Happy Birthday To Me 6/10
Disappointing. Couldn't get into this one - the characters, mostly likeable, didn't seem to care that their friends were missing, which didn't make sense and robbed the movie of tension. The twist ending with it's jumble of exposition to explain itself sounded like something from Soap Opera Digest. I've always like Matt Craven, so it was nice to see him in his younger years.

The Tripper - 7/10

That was one helluva fun movie. I mean, I sat there with my friend laughing my ass off pretty much the entire time. My only major complaint was that the gore wasn't anything great. I mean, some was cool but most of the potentially amazing kills were off screen. I still enjoyed the fuck out of it. Arquette knows how to make a fun movie!

What....a......piece.....of......shit.
The acting is horrible, the script a complete joke, the direction is shoddy and it looks terrible.

As I was getting ready to pop in The Beyond today I caught Bride of Chucky on television so I decided to watch that also. Since I only saw it once about six years ago I figured I needed a refresher. The Beyond was definitely the favorite though. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

Pretty abysmal sequel. I don't consider it anywhere near as good as the original but also a step below even the third film.

Just had my first time viewing of:

It wasn't so bad after all. Had a decent beginning, lost me a little in the middle, but had a nice end. Still can't believe all the hype behind it though.

Wrong Turn 2 - 4/10

This movie had some great gore, but to be honest, one certain death pissed me off so much it ruined the movie for me. After it happened, the movie was pretty much over for me.

Pumpkinhead - 8/10

I finally got a chance to buy this movie and watch it again after years of not seeing it. It was just as good as I remembered. This is definitely a movie that, in my opinion, is a hell of a lot of fun to watch.

Hostel II - 3/10

Not being much of a fan of the first, I went into this with low expectations. I suppose I wasn't disappointed. I don't think there was a single character in this movie that I actually cared about.

Return of the Living Dead 3 - Slow beginning and crappy ending but a decent midsection. It was probably about as good as I had expected though I would have rated it higher if it weren't for the end. It just seemed to drag on when it should have been over. It's a different kind of zombie film for sure though. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

Phantasm

Both beautifully engrossing yet thoroughly frustrating, surrealistically amazing yet at times incomprehensible, Coscarelli's horror milestone is the purest example of filmmaking of one man's unique vision, leaving it up to each individual viewer to figure out whats trying to be said. Though it seems at times like a parable of not wanting to let go of the ones you love, all one can do in the end is kick back and enjoy the rollercoaster ride atmosphere, carried along incredibly by the musical score, easily one of the best ever for the genre and as iconic as those for Halloween and Exorcist. It's a far from perfect experience though: the movie takes nearly an hour before it REALLY gets going and has some pacing problems early on. Some special effects are dated and show the signs of low-budget production values. As for the acting, Baldwin is a bit too whiny at times, and has an awkward screen presence. Every time he has a closeup you start to wonder what crappy 70s Disney movie he wandered in from. Thornbury is good as Jody and makes one wonder why he didn't pursue acting more in his later years. Bannister is wonderful as Reggie: a completely unconventional hero who is a guitar-playing hippie ice cream truck driver sucked into doing battle with the undead. While Reg wouldn't develop into an all-time Badass Hero Of Horror until the sequels not unlike Ash, he still has a cool loopy quality that makes you root for him even when he acts like a complete idiot. And then of course, there's Angus Scrimm making horror history as The Tall Man, one of the best and most underrated great horror villains ever, and who continued to impress as the series went on. In the end, one of the essential horror classics EVERY genre fan should see at least once. Now WHEN is Part 2 gonna get a DVD release???

8/10

I did something a bit out of the ordinary (at least for me) tonight:

I watched not only a black and white film, but a silent one at that! Out of the four films I watched today I would say I was the least disappointed with Nosferatu but considering how I judged the other ones that doesn't necessarily say a whole lot. Still, it was an okay way to spend 80 minutes and Nosferatu himself looked pretty cool.

Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

I guess this film may have been sufficient for me if I were still a kiddie but it didn't really do anything for me. I consider 1408 the better PG-13 thriller of the year. Besides, I think Shithead LeDouche is a turd. I hear there's plans to sequelize this though. What else are they going to do?

Yeah, I took another trip waaaay back in time today. I didn't find The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari as interesting as Nosferatu but the silent screen has started to intrigue me as of late. I don't know why. Maybe it's just because it's something different.

Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.
