Smash Cut - 6/10
Nice low budget nod to low budget horror filmmaking. The performances were bad but that's what they were going for. Gore in the vein of classic Hershell Gordon Lewis (plus a cameo by the man himself!) but the storyline was poorly executed and dragged a bit. Doubt I'd rewatch it.

I just saw this ultra-low budget vampire movie last night called Brotherhood of Blood, part of Lionsgate's Ghost House series. Though the cover shows some chick weilding an AK-47 there was very little action and most of the kills were offscreen. It does have a pretty good twist in the end, however.

Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child

This is a film that really ought to be better than it is. The central idea of Freddy using the dreams of Alice's (Lisa Wilcox, back from Nightmare 4) unborn child to enter the world when she's awake is really strong, and loaded with potential. Sadly the inspiration is squandered in a poorly written and shot film in which Freddy has finally become a total cartoon, stripped of all menace.

Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare

Freddy's Revenge was awful, but this staggeringly terrible franchise 'closer' is easily the worst of the Nightmare films. It looks cheap and tacky, with Freddy's make up having deteriorated film by film, ending up with the mess on Robert Englund's face here. The special effects are anything but and the whole thing plays like a cartoon - like the worst Looney Tunes ever made. The deaths are just embarrassing, in particular that for Breckin Myer's character, and Freddy's own death is boring and anticlimactic. Thank God Wes Craven got to finish out the series three years on.

The Children ('08) - 8/10
Christmas holiday, kids go berserk. Very nice surprise, kids typically annoy the shit out of me, especially when put in film so I wasn't expecting to make it past the 20 minute mark but they actually did really well in The Children. The acting overall is very good and it builds up some decent tension at times. Has some balls too. Worth checking out.

Offspring - 3/10
Bad acting, bad writing, dull.

The Thaw - 8/10
Really enjoyed this although one of the characters was rather irritating.

Seventh Moon - 8/10
Directed by one of the guys behind The Blair Witch Project, the lighting made it difficult to tell what was going on at times but it was an enjoyable ride.

Necromentia - 9/10
One of the best STD horror films I've seen for some time.

Wrong Turn 3: Left For Dead - 5/10
Worst of the trilogy.

Magic (1978)

If you are a fan of Anthony Hopkins, Psycho, and/or are scared by ventriloquist dummies, you owe it to yourself to check out this underrated and fantastic gem. The film is what would result if Psycho and Child's Play had a love child. Burgess Meredith is also stellar here.
