I've never seen MOUTH/MADNESS. Isn't it directed by the man himself, John Carpenter? Would someone summarize the story for me?

In my book, CANDYMAN is one of the best, most intelligent horror films of the 90's. Pretty hard to beat. MOUTH/MADNESS wasn't well-received by critics upon initial release, but I'm learning to forego most self-appointed film critics nowadays (with the exception of The Arrow and JoBlo).

My vote is for Candyman by a long shot.

In the Mouth of Madness centers around an investigator that is searching for a missing horror writer and is caught up in the the author's fictional world. I thought The Dark Half did a better job with that concept.

These movies are so different I can't see comparing them...but I'll do my best. CANDYMAN is the more serious of the two, and has a few genuinely scary sequences, not to mention a nice mix of the supernatural with Hitchcockian themes (Virginia Madsen being THE WRONG MAN, in this case). IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS is another Carpenter satire, this time dealing with the mass success of horror writer Sutter Cane. Cane's character is obviously modeled on both H.P. Lovecraft and Stephen King (he writes just like the former, but sells boat-loads like the latter). And his fanbase, again like King's, is absolutely rabid. See, the books he writes are literally driving his readers crazy. Like The Necronomicon itself, his "fiction" offers malignant glimpses of things "man was not meant to know". The more you read, the crazier you become, and these things are real page-turners. Of course, a movie based on Cane's newest book is coming to theatres next month...screw the critics, I love this movie! The critics have never liked Carpenter's work when initially released, they hated THE THING, BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA, THE FOG...they even hated HALLOWEEN at first, until a highly respectable critic for The Village Voice compared it to PSYCHO. Of course, since critics are always worried about what the other, "hipper" critics think, many of them changed their position and wrote new appraisals that contradicted their original reviews...most critics panned PSYCHO when it was originally released, for christ's sake! Whatever, don't trust 'em and I never will. Oh yeah...CANDYMAN is a good movie, maybe more consistent than ITMOM, but I prefer the latter. It's got a great concept, several classic scenes (love the old lady who runs the Inn, and I love her poor ol' husband too), a funny performance from Sam Neill, and it's one of those flicks that keeps giving after multiple viewings, whereas CANDYMAN's charms are easily taken in the first time around. IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS is just more fun, basically.

BLAKE, I'm not a big fan of snobby film critics either, but Siskel and Ebert viewed HALLOWEEN during the Chicago Film Festival, and along with the Village Voice, "spread the wealth", so to speak.

Thanks for the IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS recommendation. In another opposing viewpoint, I find CANDYMAN more intriguing with each viewing. Guess it must be the intelligent script, because I'm definitely NOT a fan of the gore factor.

Hey brother, I dig intelligent opposing viewpoints. That's one of the great functions of a board like this, in my opinion : offering everybody a fresh, 'unbiased by popular opinion' take on the popular classics, and heading people in the direction of cool, relatively undiscovered gems that deserve more respect.

It's a close race, but I like In the Mouth of Madness better since I'm a big H.P. Lovecraft fan. But both films are some of the best horror films from the 90s.
