Best of Paul Thomas Anderson

1. Boogie Nights (10/10)
2. Magnolia (10/10)
3. There Will Be Blood (10/10)
4. Punch-Drunk Love (10/10)
5. Hard Eight (8/10)

Four masterpieces and a solid debut. Not many careers start out that well. It's difficult to rank the top four, but I'd say my favorite is Boogie Nights. It's my kind of film and it is one of the most energetic films ever made. The porn industry is often used for laughs in films, but instead Anderson explores the harsh realities associated with it, which is much more compelling.

I realize this is probably a repeat thread, but I'm interested to see what people think now after they've had a few more years to reflect on his work.

Magnolia is my second favorite film of the 90's, There Will Be Blood is my second favorite film of the 00's. I give the edge to the former though, which is also in my all-time top 20. He's the most talented director of his generation.

1.) Magnolia -10/10
2.) There Will Be Blood -10/10
3.) Boogie Nights -9/10
4.) Hard Eight -8/10
5.) Punch-Drunk Love -6/10

I agree that he is unquestionably the greatest talent of his generation. To think he already made Hard Eight and was in production with Boogie Nights at my age now (24) is insane.

Hard Eight 9/10
Boogie Nights 10/10
Magnolia 10/10
Punch Drunk Love 10/10
There Will be Blood 10/10

I should also add I don't give 10/10's lightly, I can only think of two pictures in the past five years I gave a ten out of ten to and one of them was There Will Be Blood.

I would say There Will Be Blood is his magnum opus, but I think he's one of those rare people that get to have multiple magna opera.

I agree with Quentin and APZombie; it almost seems unquestionable that he is the best of his generation.

Such an amazing talent, both as a director and as a writer. The fact that he's accomplished this much by the age of 40 is mind-boggling.

What he said.

Boogie Nights and There Will Be Blood are also two of my all-time favourites. Punch-Drunk Love was great but not in the same league as his other films IMO.

I haven't seen Hard Eight yet, but definitely will soon.

Gotta love P.T.A. - one of my favorite people currently making films, and someone who will probably go down in history as one of the finest filmmakers of all-time.

I couldn't vote against one of my top 5 favorite flicks, Magnolia, although There Will Be Blood is also probably close to my top ten.

Boogie Nights - 9/10
Hard Eight - 8/10
Punch-Drunk Love - 8/10

Three masterpieces. One near-masterpiece. Two films in my top 10 of all time; three in my top 20. And one of the most solid debuts of recent memory. PT Anderson's talent is undeniable. I can't believe there was somewhat of a PTA backlash a few years ago. I'm glad people have come to their senses.

1. Magnolia - 10/10 (#2 film of all time)
2. Boogie Nights - 10/10 (#8 film of all time)
3. There Will Be Blood - 10/10 (#20 film of all time)
4. Punch-Drunk Love - 9/10 (#80 film of all time)
5. Hard Eight - 8/10

There Will Be Blood is possibly my favorite. Boogie Nights and Magnolia are such great films too. Punch Drunk Love and Hard Eight aren't quite the same, but they are still great films to me.
I'm looking forward to The Master. Probably another 10 out of 10 film. It's release date can't come soon enough.

I can endorse this ranking. Mine might be slightly different:

There Will Be Blood - 10.0/10
Punch Drunk Love - 9.75/10
Boogie Nights - 9.5/10
Magnolia - 9.25/10
Hard Eight - 8/10

Magnolia is a work of undeniable genius, but I found the characters (except for the cop) to be so thoroughly annoying as to irritate and grate on me. I realize that that was PTA's intent ... and he really, truly succeeded at making the characters obnoxious.

I wish I could like Magnolia more ... I'm probably missing something.
