GIRLFIGHT 8/10

Girlfight could have been just another over-sentimental, Politically Correct Chick flick directed by a woman (Karyn Kusama).

Thankfully, this is a beautiful film handled with a subtlety & intelligence seldom achieved in the last 10 years.

Girlfight is a movie that utilizes all its cinematic tools to the utmost. With a script, which treats the audience as adults. Rather than ramming a message down the viewers’ throats, the dialogue gently tells the tale of Diana Guzman’s (Michelle Rodriguez) gaining of wisdom.

With boxing being used throughout as a metaphor for coming of age and gaining independance. The movie constantly adds to the periphrals and still delivers some great scenes in the ring, though much like "Raging Bull" its what goes on outside the combat situation of jabs and hooks the true challenges arise.

A truly poetic film, with well-rounded characters & solid direction.

Not for everyone but those who are fans of original ideas in age old genres and are tired of pandering to the lowest common denominator, check it out.
