it's a DJ, so it's not really rap

i recommend that everyone check out DJ Shadow's new album The Private Press

it's hip hop with influences all over the board, and I play guitar so I have a small amount of the "Djs aren't musicians" thing going -- but this dude is a musical genius. check it out!

some other stuff...

Mantronix (classic!)
Non Phixion
Arsonists
Dre/NWA
Snoop
Blackalicious
Memphis Bleek
Jay-Z
Outkast/Dungeon Family

anyone else notice there are now 3 topics devoted to bashing rap/hip-hop?

isn't it funny that the only way people can make something out to be bad is by strength in numbers?

that's why I like rap - it is the rock and roll of modern time

it has roots in ALL of the music that came before it. Rap blends the styles of rock, folk (esp in the lyrics), blues, funk, jazz, latin, electronic, ecclectic, argh -- it's everywhere....

how many music forms can you say that about?

and i love hearing narrow-viewed core-rock fans saying rap is a rip-off, yet totally unaware that rock is just a blend of folk and blues. mainly blues with its I-IV-V chord progressions and 4/4 tempo

Bubba, have you ever seen that little bit of black and white film of Fats Domino, from @ 1955? He's playing and (it's a setup for the interview), the reporter asks him "Fats, what is all this 'Rock N Roll'?" Fats smiles good naturedly and says "It's called Rythym and Blues...I've been playing it in New Orleans for 15 years."

That always sticks in my mind when that whole tiresome debate about who "invented" Rock comes up.
