Simply put: why do you watch movies?

We all know whey we're here. We've got the general idea. But why do you personally have such an interest in films? What about them appeals to you? What do you look for? What won't you watch? When it comes down to it, why do you watch movies?

I watch movies because I love fiction, I love make-believe. I like to see how creative some people's imaginations really can be.

Hard question, and I could probably fill up pages.

Basely put, they are a diversion. And a time killer. Sometimes they make me think (Donnie Darko), sometimes they make me laugh stupidly (Dumb & Dumber, Raising Arizona), sometimes they make me cry (Love Affair), sometimes they make me cry and think (Schindler's List, Empire of the Sun), sometimes they make me feel good (Planes, Trains and Automobiles), etc. And sometimes they do all of that. And they give us something in common with a large portion of the populace. I'm quite anti-social. I typically just really don't like most people I meet. But I can come on a board like this and whether I agree or not with someone else's feelings about a movie in particular, I can communicate with them. I can blow off steam, and attempt to articulate feelings I wouldn't experience by myself.

Oh hell. I don't know why, I just do.***Blabber, blabber, blabber***

Movies are my passion. They are what make may day brilliant. They finish off my day with such class, the broaden my horizon when it comes to knowledge on certain things. They entertain me more than some people ever could. They are my love. They are my ambition and they do a pretty damn good job in educating me aswell.
It's an addiction.

In a word: ESCAPISM. Nothing takes you away from your life like sitting in a dark theatre, a bowl of popcorn in your lap, letting yourself drift away into the story unfolding before you on the big screen.

I loved this experience so much, I'm now working in the industry. I've met a lot of people in my profession who also got into it through a love of movies. And we're all still totally addicted to cinema. It's like, as one colleague said to me recently, "A best friend who never lets you go."

mainly for entertainment purposes!!!

however i do have a passion for film. not sure why? i just love drama! i also like to judge actors based on their performances in certain movies and i like to judge films based on their artistic qualities and lasting appeal. i always ask myself after i watch a movie-

"was this a work of art or just crap on film?" ofcourse i do consider the genre of the film before i make my final decision!!

i think i`m the best movie critic in the world!! but doesn`t everyone think the same way?

When you're watching a movie people leave you alone instead of just........ waiting for their turn to speak.

On the rare occassions i feel the need to talk to someone, movies give you something to talk about other than the weather.

Oh, and sitting eating nachos and drinking beer alone in a darkened room seems slightly less odd if Clint's shooting people on a not-too-distant screen.

bloody typos

I watch movies because it's just something I love to do. I love movies because they make me think, laugh, cry, and most importantly... they entertain me. To me, there's nothing like watching a movie. I guess you could say that movies are a part of me.

I don't know about you guys, but I think this would be a very boring place to live in without movies. I mean, what in the blue hell would people like me and the schmoes do on the weekends?!

Awe come on! You could read a book!

Fight Club is a book! 2001 is a book! Gone with the Wind is a book! Lord of the Rings is a book, etc......

I like movies. I've been watching them since I was a kid and I agree they can touch you in ways you didn't know, but so can a good book.

I watch movies because I can feel like I've been given close intimate contact to a world I may never know. But I can also get that same benefit from a well written book. I'm not trying to be the bitch here, just trying to crowbar in a bit of perspective here.

Remember: Hollywood loves books too. Why else would so many movies be made from them?

How the world might benefit if only some "movie addicts" or "music junkies" would only pick up a book once in a while. Why, what would we do with all these new found literates? Ah, perchance to dream.

Many reasons...

There are many reasons why I watch movies...and given time I could probably write a 10+ page paper about it, so off the top of my head here is what comes to mind.

Movies are a window to human nature to see what makes us tick...the stories, the characters in some way appeal to us all, because often we can relate to what is happening on screen. They are a way to see our history as human beings and how humans have evolved in the way we think, act, communicate etc. This is one big reason I love war movies and historical movies...if you want to know something about 14th century England there is a movie that can take you there...movies have the power to do that.

No other medium is like it...going to the theatres and watching movies with an audience(as they were originaly intended)...is something you don't get to experience with other mediums. Watching TV at home, reading a book, newspaper, etc. Most of these interactions are on an individual level. At a packed movie-house on friday night with a magical, amazing movie...no experience is like it...you laugh together, cry togther and cheer together...it is a kin to going to a live concert, a live sporting event and to a lesser extent seeing a play. That aspect of movies I love and is part of the fun of movies. Going out on a friday night or saturday night with friends to see a movie is something not to be taken granted for.

The history of Hollywood and movies is fascinating...over the past years while taking film classes I have come to understand a lot of the history of movies, moviemaking etc...and this leads to the point that there will always be a fascination with celebrities by the media and the public. Back in the 30's and 40's being a movie star really meant something. It is the closest thing this country has ever had to royalty...now for the most part in the modern age that has become overkill with all the scandal papers and magazines and entertainment shows. I mean do I really care who _______ is dating? Not really...but that does't discount the fact that the idea of film celebrity doesn't have a mythical allure to it.

A personal reason for me is...before I really got into films on a hardcore level I was very apathetic about what I would do with my life...I didnt have any real burning desire in school to be in business, science, politics, law whatever. Nothing appealed to me on a deep level. I had always loved sports and still do...but dreams of becoming an athlete of some sort were never driven to the dedication and desire needed to fulfill that goal and that just faded away...when I started working at Tower records and video I was a huge music geek...I had always liked movies but had never really thought much beyond that. I watched tons of free movies and really started getting into it. I feel a lot of my movie knowledge is self taught. You have to want to know about film and the only real way to do that is watch movies. I had found my passion...watching films, talking about films and wanting to write about them. I always told myself that if I finally decided to do something, don't do it half-ass. I don't want to be miserable for the rest of my life doing something I don't care about even if it means making more money. I want to do something I have a passion for and now I have found that....its the only thing I want to do and I know now is the only thing I really can do.

If my feeling about why I watch movies seem too self iondulgent I apologize but this is truely how I feel.

I love to watch movies. I come home from a hard day at work, eat supper,do a few things around the house, take a shower and settle down for the night and plop in a dvd and just sit back and relax. I look at it this way, ti's my time now. Don't call me and don't come over is how I see things when I am watching a movie.
Many people go to bed so early and live for just going to work. What kind of life is that? I work 8:30 - 5:00 and I usually don't go to bed until 1 or 2 am. I can't see going to bed at 8 or 9. That's movie time for me. I live by no one's rules. Nobody is going to telly me to go to bed at a certain time.
So I find movies to be an escape from the real world. Movies takes me away from my problems for a short while. Problems such as car, house, marriage and sometimes help with easing medical problems. When I not watching movies I'm watching tv shows. Usually after 8:00pm I love to sit down take my shoes off and kick back. My wife comes in and starts talking about work and things like the weather for tommorrow. I just look at her and say."I don't want to talk about it,cause I don't care." When I get out of work ,I leave everything behind me for the day. It's my time now. I go to the video store and grab a movie or two and head home.
My friends in work ask me how can I watch movies every night.
I said cause tv sucks. I rather stay home on the couch then go to the bar and get drunk. Why? Because my problems will still be here tommorrow and I rather save my money for something better. Movies too me are not a time killer. It's entertainment. It's relaxation. It's part of my life.
Movies play a part in everyone's life and it's the truth.
One time in your life you will experience something that you will see in the movies that really happened in real life.
When I'm really interested in a movie, I get zoned. Focused on that tv and no one can talk to me.

Movie time!

Dude, I was only kidding!

Seriously though, just because I love to watch movies, doesn't mean I don't do anything else besides that. There's many other things I enjoy doing, and reading is one of them.

I'm not one of those people who thinks that movies are a metaphor for life or somethng. The main reason why I watch movies is simply because they're a cheap and entertaining time-waster!

I see movies as stories. I watch them for entertainment and inspiration. Movies, books -- they're all like stories told around a campfire. If they can make you cry, laugh, grab your seat and give you chills, then they're good. If they can inspire you, then it's even better. But movies aren't made to be essays or intellectual dissertations: they're supposed to be beautiful and entertaining.

Movies are just bedtime stories. That's why I like seeing 'em, and that's why I wanna make some.

We all need some kind of entertainment in our flawed little lives. Some of us like to be scared because we don't get that in our normal everday life. We like to go into a cinema in the dark with an audience and be scared witless to experience what fear is and then come out un-harmed. Some of us like to laugh because we feel down or maybe because we are already happy. Some of us like to watch explosions, fighting sequences...etc. because we don't get that kick in our lives. Some of us like to go and be touched and moved or baffled by a good David Lynch mind-fucker. Some of us like to investigate a series of murders along with a detective and find the clues. Lots of us like to see and feel all of these things and that's what makes movies so important.

I like watching movies not to escape from reality... but because reality is built upon movies.

More then ever before, art doesn't imitate life... the contrary is more true... It's a long struggle for the mirors to break one in the other. We don't know who and what is a reflection of the other anymore.

We were assimilated a long time ago, but we like it that way don't we. It's fun to see people try to evolve and make different cinema... so life may change in some ways. In retrospect, it is a way to see life without experiencing it. But as well, to build life upon receival of the greater aspect. Through the eye of someone else, we see ourself. Sometimes. I just need it cause I don't have 10 different life to live. Just one and the experience is limited. Cinema open your eyes wider and let you see what you otherwise wouldn't. Let you experience others reality.
