What is A Clockwork Orange considered?

It is a pretty good movie, I must say, very weird though. I taped it off Showtime or something a while back. One day I was visiting some movie stores, whatever, and I wanted to see what the case looked like for this movie. Would you believe that this movie is under three different classifications? In one movie store, it was in horror/sci-fi...in another, it was in drama....and another it was in action (?). I would consider this a drama with some sci-fi elements considering it takes place in the future. What do u think?

That's the thing you can't really catagories the film.
It had problems as you know with the censors in Britian.
I think because they could not section it in a tidy enclave they were made unsure of the film.
Personaly I would say that this film is sub-genre you could call it future shock.

I've listed A CLOCKWORK ORANGE as one of my favorite science fiction films, but it is definitely one of those rare films that is hard to categorize or define. It is all at once: sci-fi, horror/thriller and satirical comedy.

I don't think CO had problems with the official british censors as such. Ex head censor James Freeman said he probably would not give CO a video rating if asked, allthought that was as far as it went, and that was never going to happen while Kubrick was alive because it would have been the end of his relationship with Warners, and he probably would have sued the WB to boot.

Clockwork orange was unavailable in the UK purely because of the pressure the uk gutter press put on Kubrick. His influence with warners was so great they withdrew the film for him. (and the fact that at the time some off the mail SK got from people that liked the film was quite disturbing too, so it is said).

It is a bit of a shame that it is available here in some ways. WB waited about 2 minutes after SK had died to defy his wishes (a little tasteless) and it ended the student tradition of getting hold of a millionth generation copy and watching it with yer mates.

The uk censors never officially banned or cut clockwork orange on any format

Well, at my video store it has been recently changed from Sci-Fi to Drama. I'm not really sure what it should be classified as.

It is a classic, though!

I was really disapointed by this movie, I expected something else.
Ultra violence, that ???? makes me laugh!
You have some disturbing scenes ( the rape - scene, the way the guy is "cured" ) but sorry that's not enough to me.

IMDB's classification seems appropriate enough, Crime/Drama/Sci-Fi.
I have seen it in video stores in the Sci-Fi section, sometimes drama, and at one place, in horror.
