"Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter"
I love "Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter". I have no excuse, justification or logical explanation, I just dig it. Everything that makes slasher films from the 1980's great, is here in spades. There's lots of nudity (skinny-dipping I can understand, but skinny-dipping with strangers in a notorious lake that's inhabited by a masked serial killer?). There's lots of drinking and drug use (yet only one of the teens manages to get wasted). And then there's Crispin Glover's dancing...I can't explain it...it's bad and I know it, but I can't help liking it...
Slasher flicks are, by their very nature, so contained within their own little world that any hint of reality in them would send them spiraling out of control. "Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter" is a perfect example of that. Yet another group of teens moves into the woods of Crystal Lake, this time to party for an entire summer. They move in next door to the Jarvises, a happy little single parent family. Tommy Jarvis, at such a tender age, is a real pro at making latex monster masks. Why introduce this into the movie, you may ask? Because it will come in handy later on, in the "make-Jason-think-you're-him" segment. I don't know how anyone so cunning and innovative with a machete can fall for the same trick over and over, but ol' Jason just can't help it...there must be something to it, like the relationship between an alcohol buzz and hangovers... "Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter" is the first of three series appearances for the Tommy Jarvis character. In this go-around, he's played by young Feldman...Corey that is. Though horror is not his "forte", Corey's definitely seen his fair share of this type of film ("Bordello of Blood", "The Lost Boys" and "Dream A Little Dream" among others). It would be really unfair of me to give away the ending, but it doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out that the "lone female survivor" rule doesn't apply to this film, making for a real shot at "break-the-mold" filmmaking. In the end, the film's once misleading title, not to mention the effort to completely hack Jason up in the story is useless..."The Final Chapter" this ain't...(can't wait 'til "Part X" by the way...) |

You are SO RIGHT. In my opinion this is the best in the series. The teens are the most realistic because they are so interested in SEX,DRUGS and BOOZE, and the dialogue between TED and JIMBO make them my favoutite characters in the whole series (alongside ALI - PART 3). It is hilarious - the whole 'DEAD FUCK' thing, TEDDY trying to score, JIMBO trying to be a good fuck, TEDDY cracking up at that old movie, stoned off his face!!
No skimping with the gore, and some genuine tension and eerie scenes (check the girl out in the lake waiting for her boyfriend. You know it's gonna happen, but when?! And when he swims over to the dingy, just waiting for him to realise she is dead...good shit!) OSCAR NOMINATION for BEST DANCE SEQUENCE goes to JIMBO (CRISPIN GLOVER). Luv it! I JUST LOVE THIS MOVIE SO MUCH - I COULD WATCH IT AGAIN AND AGAIN! |

The more I think about it, the more I love Crispin Glover...and since this was an eighties flick, I just wanted to mention a film i watched the other night, which may appeal to you. I mean it has sex, drugs, violence, rock & roll, Crispin Glover, Keanu Reeves and Dennis Hopper with a Blow-up love doll...I am, of course, speaking about "River's Edge"...it is such a great flick, and if you think Crispin is a great dancer, wait til you see him on speed, going out of his mind with paranoia...a great performance...

THE "FINAL" CHAPTER?
The producers of the "Friday The 13th" franchise were obviously hoping to cash in on the box-office success of the first three installments of the slasher series when they filmed "Part 4: The Final Chapter" in 1984. Don't let the title fool you, because the legendary character of Jason Voohrees was resurrected in at least five more sequels. Part 10, "Jason In Space", is due in theaters some time in 2001. The fun begins again at Camp Crystal Lake, New Jersey, when a presumed dead Jason escapes from the local morgue and returns to his old stomping grounds for more stalking, stabbing, impaling, etc. (you get the picture). Part 4 centers around the Jarvis siblings, Trish (Kimberly Beck, the film's heroine, who starred in the now defunct 80's CBS soap "Capitol"), and Tommy (played by a 12-year-old Corey Feldman during his pre-drug days), who live near Camp Blood (wouldn't they have moved away after the first mass murder in 1980?) with their divorced mother (Joan Freeman). A group of twenty-somethings portraying horny, nubile teenagers rent the summer house next door, with Jason in hot pursuit. Also along for the ride is Erich Anderson as Rob, the brother of one of Jason's past victims who is planning to hunt the crazed madman in the surrounding woods. The film plays out as expected, with the entire cast being killed off one-by-one in stylishly gruesome ways, with Beck and Feldman giving old Jase a dose of his own bad medicine in the film's bravura finale. At least the filmmakers tried with this one. The casting director scores the most brownie points for reeling in the series' best supporting cast (with Part 1 being a close runner-up). The afore-mentioned Anderson and Freeman are very good in their roles, as are Judie Aronson, Peter Barton, Crispin Glover, Alan Hayes, Barbara Howard, Lawrence Monoson, and sexy real-life twins Camilla and Carey More. The film really scores with Beck and Feldman as the leads. Beck is the last of the great "final girls" (following in the footsteps of her three excellent predecessors Adrienne King, Amy Steel and Dana Kimmell). Feldman's Tommy is one of the more fleshed-out (pun intended) characters of the series: horror movie aficionado-turned vigilante. The film's major flaws are the by-the-numbers storyline and murder sequences, and a pretty boring villain in Jason. Also, many loose ends were never tied up in this story: what happened to Mrs. Jarvis and the family dog Gordon? How was Jason resurrected in the morgue after being "killed" in Part 3? Why was Rob hunting Jason just days after his sister Sondra's death (remember, this film occurs only days after Part 3, which took place a few days after Part 2, when Sondra met her maker...shouldn't Rob have been mourning her loss rather than stalking her killer)? Why does Trish run back into the basement after Jason kills Rob? Where did Terri and Tina (the sexy More twins) come from? How did Tommy shave his head (in order to look like a younger version of Jason) so well and so fast? Overall, this film was enjoyable when I first saw it in high school (I was 17 in 1984, you do the math), but upon viewing it again as an adult, I was disappointed. Although this may not have been the official final chapter, it was the last of the decent "Friday The 13th" films. My grade: C- |

!MorganOnyx!..."River's Edge" was recently released as part of the "Avant-Garde" MGM Collection on DVD...It's got a great anamorphic widescreen transfer and is well worth a look...
Some other "Avant-Garde" Collection recent DVD releases worth checking out are: "Suture" - Hitchcockian Psychological Thriller that has a black guy and a white guy playing the same character...very unusual and very cool...Richard E. grant gives a great performance... "Stranger Than Paradise" - Jim Jarmusch classic...his first feature film... "Heavy Traffic" - Ralph Bakshi's animation/live-action flick...originally rated X...Ralph Bakshi is the amazing animator behind films like "American Pop" and "Fritz the Cat"... |

This is my opinion and lots others that when I say they should have sticked to the first four Friday the 13th, I mean it just started to get repititous (same thing over and over again) and boring. And the guy who posted this subject, you'd be surprised how many people skinny dip with strangers. Look at some of those Mexicans, I got a pond behind my house and after working in the tobacco fields, they come and skinny dip in my pond with my girlfriend and try to get their freak on.

Good call on RIVER'S EDGE! That "Blow-Me-Up-Suzy" doll was a terrific prop! At first glance, I thought Dennis Hopper was dancing with either a transvestite or a dead body!

You guys are all correct about "River's Edge"...it really was an eighties masterpiece about murder and teenagers, etc...here's some choice cuts...Layne is Crispin Glover and Feck is Dennis Hopper...Matt is Keanu Reeves...
(talking about getting rid of the dead body) Layne: The *things* I do for my *fucking* *friends*! (playing video games) Layne: I'm gonna put another quarter in this machine and take over the fuckin' universe! Matt: You only stick around here to fuck my mother and eat her food! Motherfucker! Food-eater! Mike: N-O spells nuh-uh! Layne: This is like some fuckin' movie! Friends since second grade, fuckin' like THIS [crosses fingers] and then one of us gets himself in potentially BIG trouble, and now we've gotta deal with it; we've got to test our loyalty against ALL odds! It's kind of... exciting. I feel like... Chuck Norris, y'know? Feck: I killed a girl, it was no accident. Put a gun to the back of her head and blew her brains right out the front. I was in love. John: I strangled mine. Feck: Did you love her? John: She was okay. |

good to see a new schmoe zombiejason...I just watched this flick again yesterday with chillin' with some buds and some brews, and I want a pair of those twin chicks for my very own....both at once, of course...
classic scene: Crispin and pal in back of station wagon... Crispin: Why did she dump me? Pal: Let me check with "the computer"...(tapping on seat back with fingers...pausing to look at non-existant computer screen) hmmm...you really want to know what "the computer" says? Crispin: Yeah. Pal: It says you're a dead fuck. (holding hand out LIMP...) |

good shit bra...more of the same:
Jimmy: Ted. I think...I think when we get to town I should call Betty. Ted: Jimbo, calling Betty is definitely a dead fuck thing to do.Look, first rule of love: never get rejected by the same girl twice, I mean that's useless. If you want to make a fool out of yourself, always do it with someone new. Jimmy: I don't know anyone new. Ted: Well, sex is a great way to meet them. Ted White who plays Jason, refused to talk to the other actors on the set, because he thought it would diminish their fear of Jason. |

LOL LOL! That is one of my favourite quotes of all time! "Calling Betty is definately a DEAD FUCK thing to do!" HA HA! I especially love the way Ted is listening to his walkman while Jimbo is trying to talk to him! So when he replies it's really loud and all the girls turn around! CLASSIC!
Yeah! I thought that was a really good idea for TED WHITE to do that. I bet it worked really well! I mean, most actors in horrors are shit and if they are hanging out with the 'killer' between takes there's no way they would get scared!! But luckily, the cast of F13 PART 4 are no average actors/actresses, so we had the luxury of seeing good acting and genuine terror! |

You're dead on! This is the perfect depiction of an 80's slasher flick! It's also an above average chapter in the F13th saga. I don't know.. I guess i'm just in a F13th mood today but now that I think of it, I really liked this movie. |

I've always thought of Part 4 as one of the strongest ones of the series, but not THE best.
Not many people notice this, but besides for the two "Dead Fuck" guys, who were built up greatly, all the teenagers had absolutely no character development. They were all the same. Got drunk, horny, etc. They tried to raise the death pool in this one and it wasn't smart. And someone else mentioned Tommy's mom. I believe her death was to graphic and the MPAA banned it, thus she had to be shown just being scared at him. Tommy was also shown shaving his head with a razor and shaving cream. It looks like it wasn't done nicely, but I must say that with how hard he was shaving his head, he probably would've cut his head. Overall grade for Part 4: ** 1/2 out of **** |

Nice observations - Tommy probably would've cut his head. It would've fucking hurt like a son of a bitch as well!!! As for the death of Tommy and Trishs' mom. I read somewhere, it was just a deleted scene. Trish finds her drowned in the bath! I know, it doesn't make sense!! TED - You shoulda treated her right! That girl needed to be treated RIGHT! |

The Final Chapter is an excellent addition to this series. I think Ted and Jimbo made the best duo of any Friday movie. They also died in awesome ways. "Ted wheres the corkscrew?" "Wanna give Teddy Bear a kiss?". The twins were awesome, Rob the JASON hunter was awesome, and JASON was awesome. Boy he never gets tired of wasting those sex crazed teens does he? Good for you JAS! "Thats definitley a dead fukc thing to do" Well I guess everyone... NEEDS... a mother... FUKCER!!! Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

I don't know about you, but I think I would have fell in love with Jimbo after that stellar version of the Herky Jerky.
Being a fan of classier (read: LESS FORMULAIC) fare, Final Chapter condenses the better cliches of the series. Killing Rob is a dead fuck thing to do, though. He and Trish made a good Jason killing duo. Put the bong down Corey, put it down. |

I believe everything about this movie is great. And we actually have two likable characters with Jimbo and Ted. Fun and amusing stuff. We also get to see JASON throw a girl out the window which was very cool. I give this thread and movie a ten out of ten in honor of Crispin Glover's coming back to the genre this weekend. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

well apparently smart isn't exactly a strong suit in their family...i mean, did you SEE part 2? sandra is probably one of the dumbest characters in the series! "jeff...that camp blood...i wanna see it..." get over it already, girl! christ on a frickin' crutch!!! so yeah, rob's whole 'misguided notion of justice' schtick was probably just a result of the apparent family-based retardation. one could also argue that sandra's body went to the same morgue as jason's did and upon reaching the morgue to see his sister's body, rob realized jason's body was gone and ditzy nurse and and horny orderly were dead. this then told him jason was on the loose killing again and he therefore went to stop him. those are the best two scenarios i can give. The main thing I never grasped is that because all these teens were murdered within days of each other, surely there would've been police blocks around the lake. I enjoy this Jason's "Final" Chapter as well, but I don't think its the best entry (that goes to Part 3, imo).
I'm with you schmoes in the sense that this film has a lot classic elements going for it. the characters were great, the movie is cheesy fun, the deaths are great and creative, and Jason has one heck of a demise. However, I do understand where Arrow's 2 star review for it comes from. I wouldn't call the movie average, but the movie does feel a little by-the-numbers compared to the last three movies. When I start this flick, see the opening "Best of Jason's hits" montage, Jason's escape from the morgue, and the introduction of the characters...I'm having a ball. However, when it reaches its chase finale with Jason going after Tommy and Trich, I don't feel the same sense of "awe." Part 3 had a better chase finale and one of the best ones, imo. But, when Tommy approaches Jason with his shaved head and confuses Jason, and when Jason eventually meets with death...I was digging it. I wouldn't call this movie bad, it certainly felt "classier" than the last three movies, but I sensed wear. Looking back on this one (I just watched it again last night), I think I prefer human, or as I call it, quasi-human Jason more than zombie Jason in the rest of the movies. I enjoy zombie Jason, but there's something about him when he was still part human. He actually went "Argh!" when he was stabbed or hurt. And, he ran after Trish when he had to. I liked that. Ted White in this one, as well as the stuntman in Part 3, are two my favorite Jasons. but, C.J. Graham, Kane Hodder and Ken Kirschner, are still good. One disappointment is the character of Rob, the Jason hunter going after Jason, since he killed his sister. When he finally encountered Jason towards the end of the movie, he should have had more of a fight with him. He and Jason should have had a chance to duke it out a little (a la Jason and the boxer in Part VIII), or something like that. Rob deserved it. His character was kind of wasted and felt more like a plot device to explain to Tommy and Trish that Jason was still alive. But, this Jason entry is still a good one. And, I will defend its misleading subtitle. I don't know if Paramount really intended to end these movies with this one initially, but "Friday The 13th: The Final Chapter" does mark the final entry with Jason as a quasi-human. After this, there's a copycat killer of him, and then Jason returns as zombie. I generally enjoy each and every Jason flick in their own way. I give all ten of Jason's adventures at least 2.5/4 ratings. The axceptances are Part 3 and VI, both 3/4 from me. Last edited by Duke Nukem; 09-23-2004 at 09:31 PM.. |
