Hard science fiction ain't my cup of coffee. And weeks ago.

6/10

Mildly entertaining but not the best of Dean Koontz novels.

There is a decent amount of violence and death for a YA book. I read the first one when it first came out so I can't remember all the details but I do remember thinking to myself "I can't believe this is for young teens."

Also Stephen King dug it:

And although ''young adult novel'' is a dumbbell term I put right up there with ''jumbo shrimp'' and ''airline food'' in the oxymoron sweepstakes, how many novels so categorized feature one character stung to death by monster wasps and another more or less eaten alive by mutant werewolves? I say more or less because Katniss, a bow-and-arrow Annie Oakley, puts the poor kid out of his misery before the werewolves can get to the prime cuts.

A Clash of Kings by George R.R. Martin
9/10
Not as good as the first book, but still wonderfully written and full of great characters and drama.

The Strain, The Fall

took a little bit to get going but i guess that is acceptable since it is the first of a trilogy. After a long set up, things really get good and gory and crazy. I absolutely love the the mythology of vampires that Del Toro and Hogan create here, some of the scariest, wildest, most imaginative vampires ever.

No downtime here. Runs at a fast pace and contains just the good stuff, the action and the mythology (which is what i really like in these novels). Characters are even more fleshed out here and i enjoyed this one even more than the first. I'll also mention the Setrakin interludes were really interesting this time around.

fuck, now i gotta wait until October 25th for The Night Eternal????

DC Universe: The Stories of Alan Moore by Alan Moore and Various Artists
9/10
I did not realize Moore had written so many good superhero stories.

Fallback by Peter Niesewand 6/10

This book jumped the shark. Minor spoiler- part of the plot is about a senior agent trained for a top secret mission but he has cancer and has a couple of months to live so they transplant his brain to another body so the mission can be done. Robert Heinlein's I Will Fear No Evil meets John LeCarre. lol

Pretty good. Very darkly comic. Similar to a Chuck Palahniuk novel.

Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut

Fucking hilarity. I love how self aware and casual it is written.

The ending had me in stitches.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

Really easy to read, read this immediately after Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. I think I have a new favourite writer.

Ape House by Sara Gruen

After the beautiful Water for Elephants I had high hopes for Gruen's follow up novel, and while there are certainly some brilliant ideas at play at it starts and ends well, the novel takes too many bizarre tangents throughout the middle and seems to often focus on the wrong characters.

sarah, how do you do a book every day or two? I ENVY!!

I have no problem, as a 24 year old male, to admit that the final chapter in this book made me cry. This book is unbelievable.
