new song:

Is that all there is?

PJ harvey

Have you heard the original version of this song? It's Peggy Lee from the 50's or 60's. I'm a HUGE Peggy Lee fan so this was fun to hear (cuz I'm also a PJ Harvey fan), though I'm of the opinion the original is much betterm, maybe it has something to do with which one you heard first. Give it a listen if yu haven't yet. I'd love to know what you think...Her voice was so sexy.

Oh, and sorry you didnt like Chicago. You probably aren't a big fan of musicals. I am THRILLED that the original formula musical is back. Chicago was the best thing I've seen, not only this year, but in YEARS. Of course, like I told Joblo, if I was alive in the 50's I wouldve been Gene Kelly's stalker.

The Stooges - Dirt

Hah. Didn't even have to download this one. Just reached out and plucked my copy of Funhouse from the CD rack...popped it into the cd player and wham-bam-thank-you-mam...DIRT!!!

I was a fan of Iggy the solo artist...Iggy of The Idiot and Lust For Life fame...before I backtracked and discovered the sleazy, proto-punk of The Stooges. Sandwiched on that album between two pieces of heads down rock mayhem (T.V. Eye and 1970) Dirt is a real slow burn of a track. Iggy sounds like a blues lizard on this song. His vocals are a molten croon with some supremely groovy backing from Dave Alexander, Ron Ashton and Scott Ashton. Not my favorite Stooges track by a long shot but i'm a true believer and being such there are no tracks I can honestly say I don't get some sort of kick out of.

Next up for your delectation...

*TAG*...sorry I put tag on the last one, didnt realize it was yours Psychocandy...

Anyway, on a side note...I love the stooges, they're one of my favorite bands and 'dirt' was a great picks...I love how there are always one or two works Iggy chooses to 'belch' out in their songs. I always thought it was sexy, though I could do w/out looking at the poor skeleton of a man.

Wow I never knew this was a remake. The original is so good. I just downloaded it and listened to it. Thanks Siren this version is easily going to become a favorite.

Calexico-Ballad of Cable Hogue

Soothing rock beat w/ south of the border sound and good almost Love and Rockets style vocals. Very honest in appeal with a good hook and classic style. I liked the effect of the mild female vocals over the chorus...listening to it again and it sounds alot like something from the mid 90's on the subpop label. What year was this from?

Next Pick-one of my favorite male artists and one of the greatest guitar players I've ever seen live...a virtual legend among musicians here in the states.

Phone call from Leavenworth - Chris Whitley

No joy with “Starve To Death” I’m afraid Siren…I was just getting the ol’ MORE SOURCES REQUIRED message.

I’m usually not overly fond of the Americana/roots thing but this little ditty is something else, INSTANTLY appealing. The vocals are strong, and very passionate…and the geetar is bloody rollicking in parts. The lyrics are solid and the end result…a neat little bluesy package. It’s definitely a grower as well. I’ve listened to this 3 times already and it sounds better each bloomin’ time…I’m starting to wish I had a front porch and a faithful mutt to kneel at my feet. Great pick Siren…This geezer deserves a bit more recognition by the sounds of things.

Thanks!!!

Frank Zappa

This song was completely different than anything else I have heard from Zappa before. I liked this song. The lyrics and the snapping is fun. The ending is a little creepy with him whispering though. I love experimental music. If there was ever a poster child for experimental music its this song. I have only heard a little of Zappa compared to the huge body of work he has put out and it looks like I'm going to have to get crackin and start downloading some more songs by this man.

Now for a little fun

Titanic- russian remix- Red Elvises

If you can't find that one but I hope you do heres a much easier track to find by this great Russian Rockabilly band.

Unfortunately I couldn't track down "Titanic-Russian Remixes" Bowieee, but SWEET JESUS, I will be desperately trying to track down EVERYTHING I can find by these little buggers!!!

My love is killing me - Red Elvises

"We were making love, she didn't mean any harm. It became a wicked game when she broke my arm..."

Lmao, this is BRILLIANT STUFF...Bloody BRILLIANT!!!

"I can forgive you the bruises and cuts. I can forgive you the scars on my nuts..."

How can he sound OH SO sincere??? When he said "I am sca-ared of her" I couldn't help but GUFFAW. This is cultish stuff, and it's actually really decent music...a fabulous blend of Rockabilly and carefree indie, reminiscent of Richard Marx and The Shadows for some bizarre reason (I hate The Shadows, this is wierd)!!!??? As you've probably gathered...I LIKE THIS. It's his voice, and the sentiment, and the subtlety of the humour, it's hardly even noticeable.

Great stuff Bowieee, thanks for the giggles...

Yeah I love those guys. I just got the chance to see them live over the summer and they can work the crowd like nobodies business.

BCV check out the movie Six String Samurai. the whole entire soundtrack was done by these guys (well except for the score). Plus the movie is really really good. Glad you liked them.

I'm going to download this song just for fun. i've heard so much about the divine comedy but haven't actually heard much of them.

Very my style.

I just finished listening to Songs of Love. It's Haunting and the kind of voice that could hold my attention for eternity. I love music that sounds like someone is just reading a poem with music playing in the background. This song falls into that category. I just now put 4 other songs by them to download as I write this. Thanks BCV I liked these guys alot.

i'm not the biggest fan of the divine comedy i say them support james a few years ago and to be honest they bored me after a bit,but i have to admit this one is a pleasant suprise,i could imagine singing along to this while drinking a pint of guinness and swaying along to the jangly flowing music.
the one strength they have is great song writing its just that a lot of their stuff is very samie, but i like this one a lot.and the little music interlude in the middle is great very folky and dramatic,i may have to give them a second chance after this.

ok what next

Just finished listening to this for the second time in a row...
What a sad beautiful song. This song caught me off guard and kind of got me choked up. This singer sounds so alone. The song makes me want to search him out, hug him, and tell him everything will eventually work out. The acoustic guitar playing away in the background is nice as well as the rest of the instruments. I could so see this singer crooning away at a cafe with his eyes closed singing his heart out. I really liked this song alot. Thanks Paul!

I know I just put this artist down a few selection ago but I was just listening to this song and its too beautiful to go unheard right now.

I downloaded Gin Soaked boy in hopes it was a tom waits cover but the only connection is the title and the character popping up in the song. It was still an outstanding song though.

Relistening to Gin soaked boy again and its really grown on me. I think I even like this more than Songs of love. Its poppy yet not Hokey. The lyrics are its strength plus its got a tom waits character making the rounds in the verses.

I just realized he closed out the song with the line "I'm jeff Goldbloom in the fly"

Its official I love this band.

Polly Jean..

Nina in Ecstacy is a kind of oddity of Polly Jean's. Sweet, fake horns, a niiice falsetto that'd sound really great if she were screaming the lyrics..
call me crazy, but I like her alot more when she's in cocktail dress, smeared lipstick, rock and roll mode..

Her softer efforts all come across as these ghostly takes on old trad songs.. field hollers in Plants and Rags. This, I'm assuming, was taken from an old english ballad. I dunno..

A solid half an hour of Rid Of Me and there's no way in HELL I'm getting to sleep.. Although out of place with most of her music, this would serve as a nice equivicator for what she's generally trying to accomplish.. that or food?

My pick..

gotta run, so I dont really have time to check the availability of any of these tunes.. take whichever comes easiest.

Peter Sarstedt-The Sunshine Is Expensive
Rufus Wainright-Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk
Edie Brickell and The New Bohemians-Nothing

Before I review this song let me get my mini rufus rant off my chest. I have heard raving reviews for wainright but I boycotted him due to his undeserved breakthrough due to his version of cohens hallejuh in shrek. The man copied every single piano note and vocal drop from john cales brilliant version of the exact same song. It was a carbon copy. So close that I swore it was john singing the song and I almost shit a brick out of joy when i saw the movie. I was seriously pissed when I found out our boy rufus was the one riding off johns coat tails. I'm a big fan of people covering songs and making them their own but don't copy note for note someone elses unique cover and make it your own.

Well moving on to the actual song. Cigarettes and coco milk is a pretty decent song. Sweet and mellow. I Kept an open mind while listening to this song and was geniunely impressed. Its a really cute song. It sort of feels like it could have been thrown right in the middle of the cartoon movie "The Point" and fit right in. I'm sure I'll listen to it again and now since I've purged my demons involving rufus I'll be keeping an ear out for his other stuff as well

i liked this a real epic track superb musicly great guitars that change pace right through the song,it feels really comfertable at the start the singers voice very haunting and clear, then it just kicks into a swirling number with a womans voice half screaming half moaning in the back ground,i was really swaying to this head was going in all directions, reminded me a little of james while not sounding really like anything of theirs,a weird statement i know but it just did.
great choice thanx bowieee

I just listened to this twice, to get the real feel of it. I really think this guy has great potential as a vocalist and I liked the opening particularly well, where it was just him and the piano. I think the song kind of went into a 'Ben Folds Five' sound when the rest of the music kicked in, of which I'm not a huge fan, but the song still has appeal and is worth a listen.

Next Pick- (a trip down Delta Jazz lane)
