~~~~HOCKEY PLAYOFFS CENTRAL~~~~
This is the place to be for the next 2 months to bitch, whine and boast about your favorite team when and if they get eliminated from the 2003 edition of the NHL playoffs.
Also you can place predictions HERE for rounds 2 through 4 when the time comes...
I'll start off with this controversial topic that I'm sure schmoe BOB will appreciate.
The Aves are a way overrated team that will get smoked by the Canucks in 4 easy games in Round 2.
Heh, heh, BRING IT ON!
I just wanna say God Bless You for making a topic strictly for hockey. Me being a non-fan of the sport was getting sick of seeing topic after topic pop-up about hockey.
I'm sure some people think that about my sport, baseball.
But. I don't care.
Word up! The next best thing to bob, me!
I am excited for this years playoffs.
Can't wait to see all the Sens fans crying about their loss.
While Toronto, as usual, goes on and kicks some ass!
A few predictions....
- I think one of the "young" teams; Minnesota, Tamapa Bay, Anahiem will make their mark.
- Sens will NOT win the cup. I am sorry, but I am still not convinced that they have a Stanley Cup team.
- Colorado will make is as far as the third round. Foresberg will kick ass, like last year. And Roy won't allow 6 goals of 16 shots .
Who will win the Cup??
I am not quite sure. I think it is too early for me to decide.
So, grab a beer, pull down your pants, Playoffs are here!!
P.S.- I so dearly hope a Candian team will bring home the cup! Those Americans have had it for far too long!
If this answers Indiana Sev's query...
Born in Maine, lived there for two years, moved to Nova Scotia for six years, lived in Denver ever since. And, FYI, I only started loving hockey once I moved to Denver (incidentally, in the same year the Avs did. )
My first round playoff predictions:
EAST:
Ottawa vs. Islanders: Ottawa in 5
New Jersey vs. Boston: NJ in 6
Tampa Bay vs. Washington: Washington in 6
Philadelphia vs. Toronto: Toronto in 7
WEST:
Dallas vs. Edmonton: Dallas in 5
Detroit vs. Anaheim: Detroit in 6
Colorado vs. Minnesota: Colorado in 6
Vancouver vs. St. Louis: Vancouver in 6
1. The Avs are not overrated. They are appreciated. Just because a team is appreciated doesn't mean they are overrated. If you watch ESPN, all the broadcasters will pick apart the team for weaknesses before slathering praise on Detroit.
2. If the Avs were to meet the Canucks in Round 2, Detroit or Dallas would have to lose, which is pretty unlikely.
3.I think The Avs could go all the way to the Cup, but not if we have three seven-round series like we did last year. I believe we and Detroit have the most complete teams in the playoffs, whether or not they are the most beloved. I mean, we've got Roy, Sakic, Forsberg, Blake, Foote, Morris, Tanguay, Hejduk, De Vries...I could continue.
4. And I will. Although we don't have 3 & 4 line scoring, we've got energy, and everyone from Dan Hinote to Riku Hahl has stepped up in playoff years past to get a big goal.
Notes NOT related to the Avs:
1. Philadelphia vs. Toronto will be one of the most exciting series in the Playoffs, with Toronto coming out on top in Game 7, probably in OT.
2. I don't see any newbies coming out of the first round.
3. Honestly, I like New Jersey vs. Colorado in the Cup Final, with Colorado on top because New Jersey will have just had to play tough series against Toronto and Ottawa.
Wow,a Maritimer, you're okay in my book now, BOB.
Anyone from Atalntic Canada can't be all that bad. Good luck with your Nordiques!
P.S. Our first round predictions are pretty similar.
I'm from New Brunswick and my beloved Habs failed to make the post-season...so instead of predicting and cheering for the other Canadian teams, I become a turncoat and root for the Dallas Stars. I think they will take it all, and I hope they will...just as long as Toronto, Colorado and Detroit don't win I will be okay though. Man I think I might just have alienated myself from half the board
Lightning over Caps in 5
Flyers over Leafs in 5
Oilers over Stars in 7
AHAHAHAHA!
I bet all those Sens fans wished they didn't make jackasses out of themselves when boldly predicating a sweep in the series.
But of course, they'll say it's just one game. They better hope the team gets their shit together for Saturday night. I know Garth Snow isn't that good!
First Playoff Day Results....
NYI 3, OTT 0
NJ 2, BOS 1
TOR 5, PHI 3
EDM 2, DAL 1
Congratulations to blankpage on his club winning a wild match.
How about Edmonton over Dallas and New York over Ottawa? That caught me off guard. I watched the TOR-PHI game, natch, but these seemed like they'd be great games, too.
Of course, that's nothing compared to what us Nordiques will do tomorrow...
(actually, the Avs are prone to playoff blowouts, whether it's 8-1 over Florida in 96, 8-2 over San Jose in 02, or 7-0 loss against Detroit in 02 [Christ, even I won't let me live that down]).
I'll refrain from making any predictions because the games tend to go exactly the opposite to my preds...Also, I don't want to make a fool of myself by predicting a Sens sweep
Islanders - Senators 3-0
Crap.
It'll be 5 games, then.
Alright so Ottawa and Dallas choked I didn't see that one coming at all, but if Ottawa keeps focusing on Yashin instead of the game I know they can play they and if Snow plays the way he did last night Ottawa will lose this series because the Islanders are a tough team to play against.
This is also the 3rd straight time the Senators have opened the playoffs getting shutout. At least my Leafs won that all that matters in a typical leaf game. Get the lead in the first, play horrible in the second period and get a couple of players injured, and come back in the 3rd and win it thank you Donald Brashear for the stupid penalty to give us the win.
Speaking of stupid penalties what were Claude Lemieux and Derian Hatcher thinking with 4:30 left Lemieux takes a pretty dumb penalty and to top it off Hatcher takes a flying elbow at an Oilers player (I forget who it was). I personally think Hatcher should get a 1 game suspension for that, but knowing the NHL front office I reallt think he's getting $1000 fine.
I underestimated the lower seed teams, but I'm sure I'm not the only one.
Hatchers flying elbow was directed at Oiler D-man Steve Staios. Agreed Horrorfreak13 that it should be a one game suspension.
For anybody who is an Islanders fan forward Eric Godard was suspended for a game for high sticking Chris Neil last night. I don't know how bad it was because I didn't see during the highlight reel last night, but I'll have a look at it today.
Man, what a day. My mouth is hurting from all the playoff talk.
Ok where to begin.
WOO-HOO! Toronto was kicking some ass last night. Although I will admit, they were out played for a lot of the game. Good to see Sundin getting two assists (what with the mouth). And Alexander M . My man .
I am glad to see NYI won. Honestly. I honestly think they can give Ottawa a run for their money. If Ottawa continues to play they were last night.... it will be back to 'ol golf course. The Sens played a nervous game. My mum said they couldn't handle the pressure. I agree.
Edmonton and Dallas. Wow. I think this will be tied with the TOR and PHI series for most intense. Only game one, and they were playing like it was 7th game in the finals. I like Dallas for Modano and Turco. But I hope EDM. can pull out an upset.
Predictions VERY soon......
Well, the Bruins are my team, in case you guys didn't know. They played sloppily last night (as far as I am concerned) and need to get their heads back on the right track and beat the Devils. Down with the Devils!
On the contrary, you've just joined Submethod's and Morgana's team. GO STARS!!!
Dallas lost one? Meh...this happens every time in the playoffs. Dallas likes to tease Edmonton...you know, make them think they can win.
Give credit to J.S.Gigure for 63 saves and 36 of them in overtime if I'm correct. I wonder how many people left the Joe Louis Arena last night after they thought that Detroit won it when Robitaille hit the goal post. If Gigure keeps standing on his head like last night Anaheim has a chance.
Minnesota wins too last night with Dwayne Roloson's 5th ever playoff start and 2nd ever win even though they were outplayed at least from what I saw when they went to the game when Detroit and Anaheim were in intermission between the 1st and 2nd overtime periods. Has Roy learned to ever stay in his net especially for someone who dosen't play the puck well.
Vancouver played horrible all I needed to see last night was the first period and I really saw what was going to happen.
Out of the 8 games the road team has won 7 of them. I have the feeling an upset is going to happen and I hope not because it will pernamently kill my hockey pool, and tonight my leafs take on Phily and hope to take a 2-0 lead, but it won't be easy but play a complete game and no injuries I have enough stress already.
I kinda hope Anaheim does a good playoff season...I got a Mighty Ducks jersey, one of their good players shares my first name (that'd be Paul...not "James", not "you dirty prick" ), and I got the flicks with Emilio Estevez on VHS. Real fanboy.
I just got home from school, wiseasses.
Yes, ashamed that Colorado lost the first game. But, if you remember, I predicted Colorado in 6, which means I can give Minnesota 2 games to give themselves a shred of hope before we destroy them. As for Roy, well, he's been our man for 7 straight years in the playoffs, making an even more grievous puckhandling error in the Stanley Cup Finals in 2001. Does anyone remember how that series ended? All I remember is Roy lifting some glorified wine glass over his head.
Good luck to blankpage's Leafs tonight. And, for all you Stars fans, fear not, for you'll probably sweep the rest of the series.
Well hotdamn! I always thought Dallas was the most hated team in the NHL, but we have a very strong Stars camp here. Who-hoo! Glad to have ya, RicShaw.
The roadtrip might be a little rough, Edmonton may win one. But after that it's all Dallas, baby!
4-1 Dallas after 2 periods...looking good.
Fuck, I hate the FLYERS!
Did anybody see that clown Brashear bump Domi in the pre-game skate? No class, what an idiot! It seems the slapshot to the face he received from McSorley didn't teach this jerk some respect for other players!
I enjoyed seeing Tie pounding Donald Brashear's face in when the game got out of hand later on. Brashear got in a few punches but Tie soon polished this loser off.
They got that arrogant Roenick, the overrated Primeau and the overpaid Amonte rounding off this team. If the Flyers advance to the second round it'll be boring as hell, that's for sure.
I hope the Leafs smack these jokers around Monday night...
Oh and since my Canadians aren't in the playoffs I am rooting for Dallas as well, if only for Marty Turco and Steve Ott
Indiana- what's wrong with my favorite team? They sure looked good in their win last night! Go Flyers!
By the way, that Wings-Ducks game Thursday night was incredible. Giguere did great, he is the reason why the Ducks won the game. Too bad I went to bed right before the 3rd OT began, so I missed the game-winning goal.
SO, who's everyone rooting for in the Frozen Four championship tonight, New Hampshire or Minnesota? I feel bad doing it, but once again I'll be rooting for the Golden Gophers.
Does anyone else kinda get the feeling that there were a whole bunch of flukes in the Game 1's? I mean, I get the sneaking feeling that Dallas, Detroit, Vancouver, and Colorado are all gonna sweep the rest (Colorado and Vancouver would have the most trouble, but it's possible), and Ottawa probably will, too.
I think most people know that the superior team will prevail in the end. Like I don't think anyone seriously believes Anaheim will beat the Red Wings or Edmonton suprising Dallas.
However, I leave the possibility of an upset in the Ottawa-NYI series and even more so in the Vancouver-St. Louis series. Experience is a major factor.
Today's Scores
Anaheim over Detroit, 3-2
Colorado over Minnesota, 3-2
Washington over Tampa Bay, 6-3
Well, I'm only really suprised by Anaheim beating Detroit. That will no doubt be a crazy series, so I'll amend my predictions to Detroit in 7 (I REALLY want to bet against Detroit, but I don't see it happening). Washington has basically got there series wrapped up after two games, and the Colorado game was exactly as I suspected: We bounce back after a bad loss.
