Treasure Planet

.

So we get the prestreet for Treasure Planet, and the first thing that pops into my head is "should I?"

I mean, I have Atlantis MEMORIZED. And that movie wasn't all that hot the first time I saw it, but after having it in the background on the TV for my first three weeks on the job, one can really get sick of it.

So, with Disney's latest foray into 2-D/3-D meshed animation, basically intending to rival anime in terms of intricacy and overall quality, did they do it?

Gimme a nice, big, resounding YES.

The trailer for this movie was what really had me going, way back when I saw it on the Monsters, Inc. DVD. Good GOD, was it amazing--a slick, futuristic remake of Treasure Island, with pretty much everything intact from the original, and a few modern puns and homages put in for good measure.

Just like Robert Louis Stevenson's original, the story centers around young Jim Hawkins, who is given a map that leads to "the loot of a thousand worlds," the fabled Treasure Planet. What starts as a simple "get the treasure" adventure turns into a race against brutal spacefaring pirates hell-bent on taking the loot for themselves.

While the story doesn't have much new to offer, it's the overall look of this movie that makes it such a joy to watch. You get to see spacefaring clipper ships powered by "solar sails," cannon-volleys, escapes from exploding supernovas (an amazing retelling of the storm in Treasure Island), and enough chases and action to make a hardened fight nut like myself scream for blood--during a Disney movie!

Disney did a damn fine job with this one. The package is completed with two new songs from Goo Goo Dolls lead John Rzeznik, who also has a video for the single "I'm Still Here" on the DVD.

9.5/10. The closest thing to animated perfection this year, and it should be one of Disney's all-time classics, a list I'll put up sometime in the Best/Worst/Favorites Section.
