TORONTO -- A father who allegedly grabbed his 10-year-old daughter by the face mask and shook it at a youth hockey game has been charged with assault, police said Wednesday.
The identity of the man and his daughter cannot be made public because of the daughter's age. "The allegation is that a gentlemen grabbed one of the hockey players by the face mask as they left the ice rink and started shaking, yelling and screaming at the 10-year-old," police Sgt. Paul Malik said. Coaches of the girl's team intervened Saturday and someone dialed 911 to bring the police, who arrested the 38-year-old father on one count of assault, Malik said. The girl required no medical treatment, but "she was shaken up quite visibly," according to Malik. He said the father was released on condition he will return for an Oct. 14 court appearance. The family moved to the Toronto area from California earlier this year, Malik said, and the father has gone to live in Michigan after the arrest. Last year, Hockey Canada launched a public campaign called "Relax, It's Only a Game" that focused on educating parents who had trouble controlling their emotions at youth hockey games. God this sort of this disgusts me! People like this have no business even going to these events. I remember playing little league ball and having the dad of one of my neighbors actually stop the game and come out to the picthers mound and berate his son. It's bad enough to humiliate your kid like that, but taking it to the level of violence is absolutely disgraceful. How can this guy live with himself? They are just kids trying to have fun for christsakes! I don't even know what more to say. ![]() |

What's up with overzealous 'rents at little league games? Back in my day no parent ever got physical with either his/her child or an officiator. Sure, my dad was on the field umpiring and my mom in the concession stand, but I can't recall any parental unit going off the deep end.
Won't somebody please think of the children?!? |

Show me an out of control parent at a game and I'll show you a failed athlete from the past.
Over the years I have quite enjoyed going to some of my younger cousins games and now my nephews just to see the idiot parents rant and rave on the sidelines. These experiences are exactly the reason why I've twice turned down the chance to do some pee wee football coaching. I just don't have the patience for it. I'd end up in the headlines for beating the shit out of parents who were constantly berating me or their own kids. The refs however....fuck em... (just kidding)My own dad was probably at the other end of the spectrum. He went to nearly all my games all through childhood and school. He was even my baseball coach a couple seasons. But he never had much to say. Sometimes he may say good game or might mention something I may need to work on, but overall his philosophy was to let the coach handle that stuff. He was satisfied as long as we were just having a good time. I would love to sit down with one of these out of control parents and have a serious discussion about why they do what do. What is really going through their mind? Don't they realize that they are embarassing the hell out of their kids? |
