What category will surprise us this year?

I dont know about you guys but Adrian Brody beating Daniel Day Lewis and Jack Nicholson last year was the biggest surprise from last year's Oscars for me.

This year everyone is farily confident that Sean Penn and Charlize Theron will take home the bald headed naked man for their respective categories. Lord of the Rings will win Best Director and Best Picture, everyone thinks. But what category will SURPRISE us this year?
Choose from Best Actor, Actress, Film, Director, Sup. Actor and Sup. Actress. If you think any other category will surprise us let it be known.

I personally think that Supporting Actor will NOT go to Tim Robbins and that it will either go to Ken Watanabe or Djimon Honsou.

What do you think?

Best Actor
Johnny Depp
Sean Penn
Ben Kingsley
Jude Law
Bill Murray

Supporting Actor
Alec Baldwin
Djimon Hounsou
Tim Robbins
Ken Watanabe
Benicio Del Toro

Actress
Naomi Watts
Samantha Morton
Charlize Theron
Keisha Castle Hughes
Diane Keaton

Sup Actress
Renee Zellwegger
Shorher Aghdashloo
Marcia Gay Harden
Holly Hunter
Patricia Clarkson

Film
LOTR
Lost in Translation
Master and Commander
Mystic River
Seabiscuit

Director
Jackson for LOTR
Coppola for Lost in Trans
Weir for M&C
Eastwood for Mystic River
Meirerre for City of God

I think we'll see some surprises in the Best Actress category. Charlize Theron looks like she's taking home the award but the oscars could do a 180 and give the oscar to Keisha-Castle Hughes. We'll just have to see.

I have a gut feeling it'd be Best Actress, but chances are, the big surprise will again be with the Best Actor category. After all, Murray and Penn are stiff competition, but Depp could, for some weird reason, steal it all away

Best Supporting Actress....

Im thinking that Renee will lose.....the Academy will wait and honor her as a Lead Actress I believe.

I have a feeling that Shoreh Aghdashloo or Patricia Clarkson will win.

I think Renee deserves it, but I have a feeling the Academy will suprise us and give it to someone else. Poor Renee.

I picked BEST ACTOR because it seems like Sean Penn or Bill Murray are the favorites, but Ben Kingsley's amazing performance will hopefully shine through and give him the award.

There are a lot of catergories that could go the way of two frontrunners splitting the vote and one coming up the middle and winning (instead of Penn or Muarry, Depp or Kingsley, etc). I agree that Penn and Robbins are not as sure-things as some think. Mystic River (which I thought was great) could be the one that walks away without a single statue. And if something crazy were to happen, LIT could actually win best picture if LOTR and Mystic split the vote, however some thought the same thing would happen with Moulin Rouge or Chocolat. I think LOTR has it.
Best pic, Actor and Actress each seem to have one that can't win (M&C, Jude Law, Diane Keaton), but the supporting roles all seem to have five solid contenders. Should be interesting to hear the buzz over the next few weeks....see which "sure-things" are still considered that when it's time to hand them out.

Well I hope it's NOT Best Supporting Actress. Just give Renee her Oscar already! Other than that I don't care.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS is usually the surprise of the night, but since Renee Z. seems to be a lock this year, I'll bet that the BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR trophy is up for grabs...any of the five men could win!

I think Keisha Castle Hughes could get best actress, also I don't think it's certain at all that Jackson's a lock for director.

Best Supporting Actor.

Benicio del Toro was much better as the "grief stricken" man than Robbins. Sorry but a few cold stares doesnt do it for me.

Best Supporting Actor. I have a feeling Robbins will be upset by either Del Torro or Watanabe.

Sofia Coppola could pull an upset in either Picture or Director, if two things are done: 1.) her daddy does some campaigning on her behalf, and 2.) Focus plays up the gender thing. It probably wouldn't be enough, though. The Academy knows the type of scrutiny they'll come under, by the fans and the press, if this happens. They're cautious about these things.

Robbins seems safe, but he could easily be upset by Djimon Hounsou or Alec Baldwin. Del Toro is probably out of the race, given that he just won this two years ago, and Watanabe's film isn't very popular with the Academy, with it missing a nod for the biggest star in Hollywood, Cinematography and Score (the latter two were seen as "locks" by all). Robbins losing this would be a travesty, imo.

Zellweger may or may not win, it depends on how much they like the film and her performance. Aghdashloo pulling something similar to what Gay Harden did two years ago, isn't out of the realm of possibility. Clarkson could easily win the SAG, with her double nomination, making her a viable threat. Harden and Hunter already have their Oscars.

Theron seems safe, but Hughes has real potential, with some of the biggest names in Hollywood openly campaigning for her-- Clint Eastwood, Michael Douglas, Julia Roberts and Billy Crystal.

Penn's announcement that he will attend the Oscars will help him out tremendously, given that it came so early on in the final race. But, he could, once again, be robbed of the win, but this time by Murray (who's excellent, but not win-worthy). If this happens, it wouldn't really be an upset. I've a feeling it will.
