BLADE RUNNER Special Edition DVD?
My fellow schmoes and DVD fanatics:
Yesterday, I bought Blade Runner at Best Buy for a killer price of $10 dollars. It sounded like a good deal at the time, so that's why I bought it. I have seen the film before, but that was many years ago, so I hardly remember much. That's besides the point, though. Anyway, I'm starting to think it might not have been a good idea to purchase it. Does anyone know if the WB have any future plans to release a SE DVD with, perhaps, both the director's cut and original theatrical version? If so, I plan to return the DVD, because I rather wait, than let my money go to waste. Should I keep it, or should I return it? Decisions, decisions. ![]() Strider |

well Blade Runner SE has been talked about on this board alot. Director Rigley Scott would love to recut the film and make a DVD simular to his Legend one which has both the new cut and the original with all the bells. Problems lies in theirs some legal trouble souronding the film for some reason. They are currently tring to work it out, but a release date is a long time away. THe WB version is lower quality but not as bad as some of their DVDs like Backdraft, Maverick, or Outland. (all which need to be remastered abd rereleased in AWS) Its a film well worth owning and double dipping latter when the SE comes out. I say keep it for now. $10 is cheap enough.

Ridley Scott has publcly announced that he is is unhappy with the current release of the DVD and did try to recut his own difinitive version of his film.
Back In 2002 there was supposed to be a 3 disc edition which, over legal issues looks as though it will eer happen. It's rumoured though that Warner Home video are planning a re-release without Scott's definitive version. So it doesn't look like good news for Blade Runner fans |

I saw the Best Buy add 2 for $20 too. Its hard to resist getting it because its a classic film, but sonner or later it will get dipped, i can't wait.

Thanks for the responses, thus far. It sounds like, from what I'm hearing and reading, a special edition DVD of Blade Runner is far away in the not-so-near future. I think I will keep the DVD. Besides, $10 dollars was a good deal.

It'll take some time before Ridley Scott jumps through all the legal hurdles in takes to obtain the rights to release his definitive cut.
For now, the 1997 director's cut dvd will do, especially if it only cost $10. |

Yeah, 10$ isn't bad considering the greatness of the film. Yes, it was in the trade magazines a year ago that Ridley was putting together a 3 disc edition (I work at Hollywood Video). I do think it has some kind of legal battle that's holding things down.

The current version is the worst DVD I've seen.
The title menu has a big WB logo and for the "Jump to a Scene" it leaves some out. Not to mention the snapper case, the flipper disc, and the ripply picture. Now I'm not one to critique the quality of technology, but the obvious low quality on this disc may, or may not, have been responsible for the 7/10 I gave it. |

According to The Digital Bits there is an edition in development, though it does not have the original theatrical cut, which is a shame.
But then, it is much better than nothing, as I'd rather buy this than that crappy DVD produced in the early era of DVD. Such a waste. |
