Anne Baxter
I just re-watched her Oscar-winning performance in The Razor’s Edge - what an amazing piece of work! With her sympathetic and utterly heart-wrenching performance she manages to steal the show from the all-star cast of Tyrone Power, Gene Tierney, Clifton Webb and Herbert Marshall (I'd now consider this the second greatest supp. performance I’ve seen).
That same year (1946) she was wonderful as Paul Muni’s love interest in the Capra-esque fantasy/comedy Angel on My Shoulder. In All About Eve she more than keeps her own against Bette Davis (of all the Davis movies I’ve seen I can think of only one other actress who managed not to get completely overwhelmed by Bette on screen - the great Miriam Hopkins). I’m starting to hate how everyone raves about Bette and ignores Anne who was just as brilliant in what was probably the more difficult role. But who could forget her deliciously evil, sexy turn as Nefretiri in The Ten Commandments (1956)? And her racy saloon owner spiced up the 1961 version of Cimarron perfectly. Oh and I need to mention that in addition to being such a great actress, I find Anne to be one the sexiest women I’ve ever seen. Not incredibly beautiful perhaps, but she sure was hot, especially in later (post-Eve) years. In the early to mid 1940s she was still too baby-faced to be considered hot, but she was perfectly adorable. At least I think she was. P.S. Hey all you Orson Welles fans, how big/good is her part in The Magnificent Ambersons? ![]() |

Her role isn't very big in The Magnificant Ambersons and I wouldn't say she's either good or bad, just...there.

Oh well...
I guess I'll still see it, but it'll be later rather than sooner. |

On another note, I just rented The Razor's Edge from the video store yesterday and will probably watch it today. It's almost 2 and a half hours long, though. Wow.

Anne Baxter rocks! I haven't seen The Razor's Edge though (Trinity, you know my taste well, do you think I'd like it?) and several of her films, but from the small amount of hers that I've seen, I can safely say that she's incredible and breathes life into the characters she plays. She was absolutely PERFECT as Eve Harrington in All About Eve, with that tender innocent face and a presence that speaks of that sensible lady like quality hidden beneath the delicate glance, makes her seem so adorable and sympathetic, even if she was playing a rather unlikeable character. But she pulled off the role with the right mannerisms and delivery, especially with the difficulties given to that part. Beautiful, talented actress who I should really see more of. YAY!!! |
