Tom Hanks has regained the top spot as America's favourite movie star as heart-throb Tom Cruise drops off the annual top ten list.

In the poll, the Forest Gump actor climbed three place from last year while Cruise dropped off the list having previously been at number five.

Other favourites such as Mel Gibson and Julia Roberts - the only woman in the top ten - slipped to number two and three respectively.

Meanwhile, Johnny Depp showed the biggest gain, leaping to number four from tenth place in the Harris Poll, which was conducted online.

Other climbers include Denzel Washington, who is currently at number six from ninth place last year. And George Clooney joins the top ten coming in at number ten.

Despite it being 25 years since he died, John Wayne is on the list at number seven while Clint Eastwood is at number eight.
