9 Zombie Flicks For $8! (Includes the original NotLD!)

I just picked up a DVD set of 9 Zombie flicks out of a bargain bin for $8 USD. The set includes (on 3 DVDs):

The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave
The House by the Cemetary
Fangs of the Living Dead
I Eat Your Skin
The Last Man On Earth
King of the Zombies
NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968)
The Thirsty Dead
Messiah of Evil

Bonus features include the trailers and making of NotLD.

I think Night of the Living Dead is well worth the $8 alone!

Thoughts?

Most of those films are garbage, and I can assure you that the image quality will be curdled. If The House by the Cemetery is uncut, it's a fun watch. The Last Man on Earth is passable, and obviously, NOTLD is fantastic. Aside from those titles, you might as well use the discs as toilet paper.

The version of House by the Cemetary in this set is rated R, 84 min. long. Dunno if it's uncut.

Then it's definitely not uncut.

Okay, I've decided that you should get a refund. Just do what I say.

Messiah of Evil is a subtle atmospheric masterpiece. If you are expecting gut munching gore you will be disappointed. If you want to see a trippy flick watch it. It is in my top twenty horror movies. I wish a decent company like Blue Underground or Anchor Bay would pick it up.

I saw that set at Sam Goody. There is also a Sci-fi one. I was thinking about getting it because I haven’t seen Evelyn yet but I decided to eat lunch instead.

Yeah that's where I got mine. Sam Goody/Suncoast (Same company if you didn't know.)

I saw some other horror sets there that I might pick up later.

I got the original NOTLD on DVD for like 3 bucks at Walgreens. It's a bare bones edition, but I'm pretty happy with it.

Word to the wise, guys...If your looking to add a classic like George Romero's "Night of the Living Dead" to your vast DVD library of horror films. I strongly suggest to pick up 'Elite Entertainment's' Millenium Edition...

Or IF worse comes to worse there is always Elites 1st initial release of NOTLD...

AVOID---Madacy, Alpha, Brentwood or any other companies of this kind that have issued NOTLD on DVD. Madacy's version is down right SHIT, the print is choppy and filled with picture artifacting and pixels!!! To ADD insult to injury the DVD is even missing scenes from the film!

Its like Madacy was dumpster diving when they came across the print, complete and total garbage!!!!

Additional friendly WARNING to all schmoes present-

AVOID! AVOID! AVOID! DONT be FOOLED! This is the so called 30th Anniversary edition, BUT this should be called John Russo's NOTLD! Dont ask, just trust me on this...

Russo should be FLOGGED for this SHIT!

Mine's from Front Row Entertainment. It's digitally remastered and has interactive menus. What's your take on this issue?

I haven't watched the NotLD on this DVD set, but I think in the case of NotLD, picture artifacts, grains, etc. would ADD to the creepy atmosphere that the B&W aspect brings to the movie. Like I said, this movie was one of the rare instances where I LIKE B&W. Hard to really explain, but it's like seeing this scary stuff on an old home movie reel or news footage shot on an extremely old camera. (sort of like Blair Witch) The grainier the better!

To be honest The Driller Killer, 'Front Row' is a pretty decent budget DVD distributer, I purchased "King of the Zombies" and "The Brainiac" and the quality was pretty decent considering the age of those films.

How was the quality of your NOTLD DVD from 'Front Row'?

TheGorehound, in the case of a film like 'NOTLD' I can sort of see your point about how that touch of grain may highten your enjoyment of the film. Adding to the films documentary look and feel.

However, pixels and artifacting is just not what one should tolerate when it comes to any DVD.

For sake of nostalgia I still have the very 1st copy of NOTLD I purchased on VHS way back in 1981 from 'Media Home Video', and I do confess that I have pulled it out on ocassion to watch that scartched and beat up print...it takes me back to my 1st viewing of the film at the 'Drive-In' in 1970!!!

When Romero's classic hit the Drive-In screens back then it looked as if it was filmed in 16mm, but it was filmed in 35mm.

IF you get the chance pick up the Millenium Edition of NOTLD, it was taken from the original 35mm negative and still retains its creepy atmosphere. Plus, the film is presented the way Romero had intended it to be, this is the definitive MUST own DVD. It is packed with a huge amount of fantastic extras, including a very rare radio interview with the late great Duane Jones!!!
Trust me on this, you should check it out~

Looked okay to me. I was just hoping it wasn't missing any scenes or anything. I really hate that.

I concur with The Dead One. Elite's version of NOTLD is the only way to go. The print is fantastic. I value the grit of a washed out videotape, but nothing beats seeing a horror classic beribboned with exquisite image/sound quality.
