1. TRAINSPOTTING (Rent Boy is # 1, that's a given...)
2. Velvet Goldmine
3. A Life Less Ordinary
4. The Pillow Book
5. Eye of the Beholder (a strange movie that I really enjoyed...)

I would be remiss if I didn't mention his role as Duncan Stewart in the ER episode The Long Way Around from 1997. He really sparkled, as did Julianna Marguiles. It's my favorite episode of that series, and it's a CRIME that Julianna lost the Emmy that year to Gillian Anderson. I seriously considered taking hostages to try to rectify the situation.

Curt wilde was also pretty superb...but the dodgy accent let Ewan down a tad!

ARTO, you hit the nail on the fucking head with NIGHTWATCH...lousy movie (with a great trailer that hooked me in), but great performance from the always reliable and interesting McGregor.

Do the Brits, Irish, Welsh and Aussies produce any bad actors? They all seem classier and more intelligent than most American pretty boys like Cruise, Pitt, Leo, etc.

Curt Wild in VELVET GOLDMINE.
Ewan was a dead ringer for Kurt Cobain, but injected the right kind of emotion into this not-very-deep movie.

His work in TRAINSPOTTING is flawless. But the movie is actually hard to watch.

He should have a gotten a bloody Oscar for MOULIN ROUGE,not Denzel.
Those are my faves. Unless you count his all nude most of the time role in PILLOW BOOK, as a performance.

I've seen his almost as much as I've seen mine. I'm not complaining, I applaud his courage.

Ewan McGregor dick story: When I went to see The Phantom Menace in '99, I was talking to my friend about the casting choices, and when Ewan's name came up, I remarked "Well, I guess we won't see his crank in this one...", and he asked me what I meant. I told him about The Pillow Book, Velvet Goldmine and Trainspotting, and he said "Well...", indicating I should give him a report. I told him that while Ewan was no R. Bolla, he had nothing to be ashamed of. My friend thought it over for a second, then said "Good. Obi-Wan Kenobi should be well equipped."

I still substantially agree with my earlier opinons here, except that having since seen his fabulous performance in Nora, I would probably raise it up to #3. He IS Joyce for @ 90 minutes.

He was really incredible, was he not? I love him in everything, but, I thought he was quite subtle and "real" in this one.

Yes, definitely. And Joyce is far, far from an easy guy to get a handle on. Ewan did as much as anybody could do, and a little more.

The scene where he thanks her for rescuing his manuscript and tells her that instead of twisting their life together into something unrecognizable (as she's accused him of doing), he's instead trying to preserve it and turn it into something bigger, into art...damn, what a poignant scene. Good stuff.

A role that comes to my mind is his realistic performance as Grimes in "Black Hawk Down." But, it seems he never has given a poor performance has he?

BUMP for all you fans of ABOUT ADAM and DOWN WITH LOVE.

I'm not a prophet by any means, but I had a dream last night that Ewan won this year's Best Actor Oscar...then I read today (for the first time) the ABOUT ADAM raves (many Schmoes are labeling it as the year's best ensemble cast).

I'm always ready to root for an underdog, although Johnny Depp's PIRATES performance fits that bill as well, despite his American roots.

Catcher Block in "Down With Love" was a brilliant performance. Renton in "Trainspotting" is close, and Obi-Wan Kenobi in "The Phantom Menace" isn't far behind.

Whee!

I loved that nature documentary. He really comes across as a genuinely nice, down to earth person.

You're going to LOVE "Down with Love"! It comes out on DVD today here in the states and I'm off to buy it soon.
