Carole King. Yeah, she wrote songs that 99.9& of the schmoes on here would commit suicide too, but she is a truly talented woman. Same for Carly Simon and Steve Nicks.

One of my favorite song writers, singular writers and not a band effort, is Devin Townsend, the man is a genius. Him or Arjen Anthony Lucassen, also known as "Ayreon."

No. I wouldn't call him a songwriter. He writes rhymes, granted. But not "songs" - which are defined as music and lyrics. So, by this rationale as well, one couldn't say that John Coltrane was a great songwriter, because he never wrote lyrics - just music.

So, with that being said - people who write great MUSIC and LYRICS -

Maynard James Keenan
John Lennon/Paul McCartney
George Harrison
Brendan Bayliss/Jake Cinninger
Robert Plant/Jimmy Page/John Paul Jones
Anthony Kiedis
John Frusciante
Bob Marley
Frank Zappa
Stevie Wonder
