The Darjeeling Limited

The Director: Wes Anderson

The Cast: Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody, Jason Schwartzman, Amara Karan, Camilla Rutherford, Irfan Khan, Bill Murray, Anjelica Huston, Roman Coppola, and Natalie Portman

The Plot: Wes Anderson's The Darjeeling Limited stars Owen Wilson, Jason Schwartzman, and Adrien Brody as three brothers who, at the insistence of the oldest, take a train ride through India together in order to strengthen their bond. Even though the vacation goes wrong in ways they do not anticipate, the strangeness of their setting and some revealing honesty produces some surprising changes between them all.

The Date: 29 September 2007

The Rating: Rated R for language.

First movie I'll see on day one in a long while. Long live Wes Anderson!

I'll definitely be seeing this.

I'm curious to see how well it does considering Owen Wilson just tried to kill himself.

It looks good. I certainly hope it's better than the dreadful The Life Aquatic. I'm cautiously optomistic.

Adrien Brody is such an odd choice for a brother of Schwartzman and Wilson but it looks like a great part for him.

You bite your tounge sir. Life aquatic was amazing, but I understand. Most people I know hated it as well, I just dont see how. This movie does look good, I'm just afraid I'm going to have to travel many a mile to see it.

I think it's the fact that they all seem to have large noses. By that judgment, Brody has to be the "big brother."

Are you asking? Can't really tell. But I think it's pretty clear from the trailer that it'll be quirky. I mean, it IS Wes Anderson for crying out loud. I don't know if he's even capable of making a straight movie.

owww all that alternative beefcake,

Quirky demotes to be stuff thats obscure and weird to try and seem interesting, as in contrived and lame. It's almost as bad as calling it wacky, which is a huge insult.

I'm 67% quirky.

Can't say I'm that interested in this, the only Wes Anderson film i've seen that was any good was Rushmore.

that was probably his best, but I think life aquatic and all his films are top notch, but I can understand why people don't dig him, i just like angst and pretty colours.

I thought Anderson's best was The Royal Tenenbaums. I thought that was a near masterpiece. Far and away his best movie. Rushmore is great too though.

Bottle Rocket was uneven but decent but I hated The Life Aquatic.

Despite The Life Aquatic, I do have high hopes for this movie. It looks great.

I really wasn't feeling the Life Aquatic when it was in theaters, but when I watched it a second time on hbo it felt much, much stronger to me. I think part of what happened in between was that I saw The Squid and the Whale, which gave me some insight into Noah Baumbach (who co-wrote aquatic with wes). the second time I saw it the father-son relationship really emerged as a sadder and much more central part of the story than i'd noticed when I saw it in theaters. give it another try, I say.

Darjeeling should be excellent. (or at least good enough for me to rationalize my way into calling it excellent.)

I'd see it, but I'm not really all that psyched. I loved Rushmore and the Royal Tenenbaums, didn't like The Life Aquatic. In general, I'm just sick of Wes Anderson, even if I end up liking this.

Has anyone downloaded "Hotel Chevalier," off of iTunes yet? Could someone upload it somewhere, I can't get it (Canadian)

I second the guy who said someone should upload a copy of Hotel Chevalier if possible, because it doesn't look like I can get it either. And I'm dying here (literally dying) to see Natalie Portman's ass. And Wes Anderson's new film of course. *Ahem*

I'm very stoked to see this. I hope he has The Kinks in this one, as the trailers suggest. I've never been able to pick a favorite Anderson film; they all appeal to me on different levels. If he could make one where Owen Wilson climbs down the side of a house, puts out a cigarette, then vigorously waves at people above, then gets in a car, starts to drive off, but is stopped by a little kid who threatens him, then the kid spits on his car, and then Owen is locked out of the car by brat kids, so he says, "I'm fucking innocent." then just runs off looking for a giant shark set to a soundtrack of Portuguese Bowie covers.... That would probably be my favorite Wes movie.

Thanks for that Roy. I noticed the name on the soundtrack but didn't realize it was from the 60s. That's the Anderson we know and love!

Looks like it's getting pretty mixed reviews so far. I have a feeling this will be a good thing for me, as not everyone likes what I seem to like most about his work.

I put Hotel Chevalier on YouTube, let's see how long it lasts before the Nazis take it down.

By the way, you rock sir... I watched that the other day, just before they took it down. Thank you.

I really liked the short film, good work from Anderson. Typically excellent use of music and moving camera. Natalie's tush was very nice as well.

I saw it this morning in a packed house and I absolutely loved the hell out of it. I'm collecting my thoughts as we speak and I'll come back later with a full review, but I do believe this to be right up there with Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums, and I believe both of those to be fantastic, fantastic works... so this is great stuff, man.

I love you Wes Anderson.

Saw this on Wednesday.

First let me say Wes Anderson has never let me down, despite the fact that I never really connected with Bottle Rocket.

While for now, Darjeeling isn't on the same level, personally, as Rushmore or the Royal Tennenbaums, I think upon further viewing it will grow into one of my comfort films. It was fun, and intriguing and a thoughtful adventure.

8/10

I don't like Wes Anderson. I'll get that out of the way. But this film has me intrigued, oddly enough. I actually really want to see it and am envious of the lucky mother schmuckers (a nicer way of saying it) who got to see it.

Friday can't come soon enough. Thursday is the damn screening with Wes and the actors, but I have school at that time.

Eh...I suppose Wes Anderson is another one of those 'acquired taste' directors -- those who have a very deliberate, idiosyncratic way about them...like the Coens, Terry Gilliam, Tim Burton, David Lynch, Terrence Malick, Jim Jarmusch, Atom Egoyan, Alan Rudolph, and the late Robert Altman, among others. Fortunately for me, I love 'em all.

I like most of the ones you listed, but not Wes.

Wilonsky totally bashed this film, saying it's come to the point where it feels like Wes is parodying his other films.

True...but he also said he liked "The Game Plan," (!) so what is one supposed to believe?

deliberate idiosyncratic way about them? your suggesting Wes in contrived? I think hes unique and exiting. If i was going to point my finger and directer s who are contrived and self parodying I'd point at Quentin Tarantino after seeing hes self referencing bore fest Death Proof.

I love Tarantino. He's one of my favorites.

As for Anderson, I like him but I can definitely see how someone might get sick of him since all of his movies are completely similar in tone. I did hate The Life Aquatic and found Bottle Rocket to be uneven. But Rushmore and especially The Royal Tenenbaums were both awesome movies. So I like him but one or two more bad movies and I may not be with him for long. But fortunately, I do think this movie looks really good.

I hope Owen Wilson's recent suicide attempt won't turn some people off from this movie.

I meant more that he/they has/have a style of filmmaking that may not appeal to some people in everything they do. I personally think each of Anderson's films have gotten better than the last. "The Life Aquatic" was the most deadpan, bone-dry comedy I've seen...after "Stranger Than Paradise."

Wow, that film pretty much sucked. I could see it being funny with a group of friends when you are completely baked, but watching this movie by yourself is like watching wet paint dry, IMO.

The Darjeeling Limited, however, looks excellent.

Yeah I know you did and you listed a lot of great directors, sorry I dick for my last comments. I agree with you, that he gets better with each film, oh and by the way I think Atom Egoyan is a genius.
