Saw IV

Directed by Darren Lynn Bousman

Genre: Horror/Thriller

Tagline: If it's Halloween, it must be Saw.

Plot Outline: Jigsaw, as well as his apprentice Amanda, have died. After hearing of Detective Kerry's murder, two veteran FBI agents, Agent Strahm and Agent Perez, assist Detective Hoffman in sorting out the remains of Jigsaw's last game. However, SWAT Team Commander Rigg (Lyriq Bent) has been put into a deadly game himself, and has only an hour and a half to prevail over a series of twisted, horrifying traps to save an old friend, as well as himself, from a grisly demise.

Starring: Tobin Bell, Costas Mandylor, Scott Patterson and Lyriq Bent.

Rated R for sequences of grisly bloody violence and torture throughout, and for language.

Runtime: 108 minutes

I loved Saw, Saw II was a decent sequel and Saw III was decent, but it lacked the story of the first Saw. So far, not much has been revealed from trailers, which is a good thing, because the more I know, the less surprised I will be when the trademark Saw twist hits at the end of the movie. I think the series needs to end soon, because there is only so far you can go with the story. I will definitely see it, and I am looking forward to it, but judging by the trailers so far there is no evidence to show whether it will be good or bad. The only thing that is certain is that there will be blood!

I like the marketing strategy of this movie because it's so secretive and gives away so little.

Despite that, I still think it's going to be shit.

This franchise should have ended with Saw III.

I think this looks pretty bad and I liked all the Saws. It looks like it should be straight to DVD, but maybe it will be like Saw 3 and prove me wrong.

I hated Saw III, Saw II was medicore, and Saw was the only great one even though it had its outsanding flaws, but I cannot grasp why they would make a Saw movie without Jigsaw? Are they going to do a voodoo ritual as the twist?

What makes you think he won't be in it? Because he "died" the third time around?

I thought maybe he would have died the second time around. But he just kept on going, like the fucking Energizer bunny. That incessant motherfucker.

The only one I cared for was Saw II. I only liked it because it seemed to have more fun than the others. The part with the pit full of needles made me laugh out loud with how heinous it was.

Saw III though, was horrid. They didn't even attempt to get a group of quality actors around it. They seemingly just threw it out there to make money.

This one reeks of the same.

I'm going to see it just because I LOVE horror films and all the Saw movies are entertaining even if they are bad. I have to say the first one is my least favorite though. Can anyone guess why?

CARY ELWES!!!!!

He SUCKED in that movie! I mean what happened to the good old Elwes days when he acted somewhat decent like in The Princess Bride, Twister, Kiss The Girls, hell even Liar Liar!! (I know those aren't great movies but just proving a point) Even Danny Glover was shitty. Give me Murtaugh any day of the week but screw Glover in Saw.

Anyway, that's just my opinion.

As long as I come away with a slight shock by the twist at the end, I'll be happy.

I am not expecting anything that looked like SAW I or even II or III. Just expecting a typical SAW gorefest with a nifty twisty ending.

What's with all the hate on the saw films? Me IMHO I love all 3 films to death they are all great!!! Not one bad thing about them!!!

I can't wait to see the new film.

John/Jigsaw and amanda are dead they are not coming back!!! From the looks of this films looks like a prequal/sequal. I mean a shit load of flashbacks of John explaning more into his origins on why he does what he does. Why He chose Amanda. There Is something We saw but is not making sense cause we are missing the final piece of the puzzle. I mean John knew Amanda was fucking up his plan so he put her to a test now He must know im going to die and so will Amanda I want my legecy to continue I need a plan........what is it I don't know maybe he chose someone else for a backup that we did not see clearly.

Things I want to know:

Why was Gordans Pen light found at the crime scene (John was using it in saw one drawing his head trap in the hospital scene.)

What happend to dr. Gordon? Did he escape? I have not seen or heard anything since the frist film.

Why was Obi working with John he kidnaped all of the group in saw 2 and brought them to john. Ther is more to the story.

What happend to Daniel? Did Kerri take him in since they couldn't find detective mathews?

Why did the detective put a peice of evedence into his pocket from troys jaw. while looking suspecious.

What the hell was in the package for Amanda that made her brake down?

What was on the tape that John covers in wax?

In the flaskback with Johns wife why was Obi walking beside them in the park?

What happend to decetive matthews after the fight with Amanda She left him there.

Whay happend to Jeff and Jeffs daughter?

There are so many unsolved questions as I seen these films over 10x and notice things.

Why do they keep on making these films is a better question , i know because people like them and they make money . I'd like to round up all the dvds of this series , when they are collecting dust in the 3 dollar bin , make a contraption that will dangle them over my shredder , and give some of the rabid fans 1 hour to save them from a well deserved doom . Now , That i would like to see .

i might of liked this better if i had seen part 3 as the ending i wouldn`t go in expecting a big twist its more 'oh thats cool' or as i thougth this is is a dumb and cheap way to keep this series going.

A pretty good combination of the two.

Anyways...

SAW IV is good, but it's the weakest of the series.

It's a very good prequel, but the main story introduces no new particularly interesting characters, and has some very poor wrap ups for some of the interesting ones from the previous films.

The thematic depth is also lacking and it really falls apart at the end.

The traps were great and on a visceral level it rivals SAW III, and probably surpasses it and it gave some interesting backstory on John the man and his sharp contrast to the Jigsaw killer.

I liked it, but I wasn't blown away like I have been the previous 3 years.

With the first three films, the sequels especially, they're bashed mostly by people that entirely missed the point because of their extremely shortsighted POV, this film on the other hand will deserve a decent amount of the crap that gets thrown its way.

I just read what the plot is and it actually doesn't sound too bad surprisingly.

It's cool that Walhberg is in this. It gives me hope. But I also read that Dina Meyer is in too. Seeing as she died in the last movie how is it that she's back. Flashback?

I just that if there is a twist at the end it's not what I think it is. It would be completely and entirely out of character for this particular character if it ends the way I think it does. Then again, I felt this character acted out of character in Saw III as well. But I hope I'm wrong in how I think it might end.

This movie sucked. The traps were not interesting, the autopsy was the coolest thing I guess. And this film didn't make any sense. It doesn't fit into any of this series and they should have ended this 2 films ago.

"Saw IV": C-

Stick a fork in this series - it is done....
I am really considering throwing away Saw 2 and Saw 3, that is how bad Saw 4 was....

blah. this movie reaked of shit from start to finish. the franchise has just been killed. The plot is just way too dumb. And what would a saw movie be without shity editing? Yeah, it has plenty of that. Skip it.

Okay, someone has GOT to explain. I think something went way over my head here. The movie can't have THAT huge a plothole.

*spoilers*

What the fuck was Jeff doing there, when did he come into play? Am I to understand this was happening at the same time as III? Why did the cop get to see the ending of III play out? If that is the case, someone explain to me exactly why the fuck was Jigsaw's corpse at the beginning when they found the tape that warned them about the games starting again, if apparently he hadn't died yet, because Jeff's game was still going on?

And if this is a "Saw II" like deal where that character's timeline is BEFORE the others, then why the hell did he keep getting into the trapped rooms AFTER Rigg did. Huh? Someone please explain.

*end spoilers*

Anyway, with that gigantic gap in logic aside, I gotta admit it's a shame the movie got so terrible during the second half. There were several moments when I went "Well this is actually pretty clever." And the concepts behind it, many, at least, are very clever, though again either executed in awful ways or just lead absolutely nowhere (like the whole 'frame someone' plot which was clever as hell).

I also appreciate that the writers keep understanding they made mistakes in the past and try to clean them up with every new movie (I always bitched about how illogical it was that this average joe did all these contrived machines, now apparently he's a bitshot engineer; sure, that doesn't matter to the plot, but it clears that up, I guess). And I also appreciate that they're still adding to the universe instead or rehashing every movie (though this one's pretty similar to III).

I hated how half the plotlines lead nowhere, the exciting mysteries lead to boring revelations (*spoilers* holy shit, he had an accomplice? Who knew?), half the plotlines don't get closure (so, like, what up with Jill?), there are too many characters to follow around, many flashbacks were absolutely unnecessary, and some mysteries are still fucking unsolved (Jeff's daughter anyone? What the fuck!).

I also hated that this one went beyond plotholes and just ventured into the dark abyss of implausibility. Even if it 'made sense', it just doesn't fucking make sense. This is way, way, way too extreme. Also, the actors playing Cecil, Agent Strahm and whoever the fuck was in the 'trap' with Matthews were too fucking awful. Not Cary Elwes awful, but pretty terrible.

Though, I liked that apparently the writers finally stopped the self-righteous Jigsaw crap and finally admitted that he's just a fucking nut, not a savior or anything. Pre-cancer Jigsaw was pretty likable, same for Jill. And the 'revealtion' regarding Riggs' game, what the original tape meant, is again, clever. But when it happens, it's so much surrounded by shit, it has zero effect.

In the end, it has the same shit problems as the last three, only some amplified. The editing sucked balls (though I liked the transitions where some scenes bleed to others) and the dark-ass look didn't let me see half of what was going on, some characters act way too fucking strange (why did Cecil jump into the barbed wire or whatever?) and, oddly, it was pretty boring (though not as boring as III). And it isn't as gory as I expected.

3/10. Worst in the series, and I was expecting it to be the best until the awful final block kicked in and destroyed all the good it had.

Saw - 4/10.
Saw II - 5/10.
Saw III - 4/10.
Saw IV - 3/10.

Oh, okay. Good, the movie isn't THAT dumb.

I had figured out something like that but Jesus, that was convoluted. What's the point of putting the autopsy at the very beginning except to set up a twist (I was wondering why the fuck he'd warn that the games would begin "Now" if that was later), same for the alternate timelines. What's their need to confuse people, anyway?

I liked it. More than III at least. I'm a big Scott Patterson fan and I think he did a pretty good job in a thankless role. The traps were fun and gory, and the plot was at least moderately clever. For the most part, though, it wasn't at all boring and I was engaged for the majority of the runtime. II is still my favorite, as I think it has the best acting, the best twists and the best overall writing. So yeah. Pretty decent, but not as good as I or II, and certainly not as good as this year's other "torture porn" flick Hostel: Part II.

I agree with you 110%!!! IMHO this is my favorite saw film yet. These films get better and better. Im a huge fan of the saw series. I love the the entire story is being told in like one big flashback. Then ending was great as well. All Riggs had to do was wait cause time was on his side like the note said.

I knew that the detective was going to be the new jigsaw the moment I saw saw 3 last year 4X. if you don't believe me look at my post I put on moday the 22nd and now being the 26 saw 4 hits theaters. I said what I want to know in saw4.............. why did the detective put a piece from Troys jaw while looking suspecious in saw 3. that was a MAJOR CLUE for me. call me crazy I study these films and thats how i came out with my conclusion and it was right.

END OF SPOILERS.......................................... .

Well anyway I seen SAW 4 2x allready on opening day. At noon with my friend and that was awsome as this is my favorite series of all time!!! Then a hour ago at 10pm. Now I am goin to see it again tomorrow with my parents.Just bought the directors cut on dvd of 3 and it came with 3 free movie tickets.....I was expecting one not 3.

SAW - 10/10
SAW II - 9/10
SAW III - 9/10
SAW IV - 10/10 (IMHO BEST SAW YET!!!)
