V: The Mini-Series Remake

I'm surprised there hasn't been a thread on this. I'm actually checking it out right now since there's nothing else on TV for me at the moment. I saw the 1st 2 episodes of the original series but never finished it. How are people feeling this show?

It's kind of average to me. I don't like the updating they did with the terrorism plot thread, and reptilian conspiracy theories. The whole alien encounter stuff is really well done, and acting wise it's not bad. The effects are right on the money, but some of the lighting is kind of wish-washy, and what's the deal with all the unnecessary camera angles? There was a scene where the Anna's assistant guy was talking to the reporter, and it would cut after every line of dialogue, and the camera angle would be drastically different, like one shot a giant is holding the camera, the next shot, a dwarf --- they need to remember that it's an alien show and not an episode of 24 and I think it'll do pretty good.

The 1st and last 10 minutes were pretty good but lots of stuff in between was pretty boring for the most part. It seemed strange that people were able to move on in their daily lives just like that after the V's arrive. The scene with the mother and son where they have a talk about the tagging was pretty shallow and came off as lame. The bad part about the terrorist cell plot was that it felt like a generic cop drama when it cut to that plot.

I did dig the scene with the reporter talking with the head alien, Anna, about not putting them into a negative light with the interview, right before it happens. I'm hoping it picks up, since pilot shows are usually rougher around the edges.

My one other beef is that...
Spoiler:
the aliens are already revealed as traitors with some sort of evil motive.
If I remember right, the original show didn't hint to that til later on, possibly around 3 episodes in.

P.S. I noticed the camera angles too. There was one scene where it had an extremely low angle shot done for no particular reason. I hope they don't go Battlefield Earth on us.

Mmmm yes, Morena Baccarin.

I forgot that this was on tonight! For some reason I thought it was going to premiere on Thursday.

Meh. She doesn't do anything for me. Elizabeth Mitchell, who also stars in this show, is much better looking IMO.

I was at play practice while this was on, so I'll be watching this in a few minutes. I hope I'll love it. I think it looks great. Hopefully, ABC will have another winner in their hands on the heels of the awesome (so far) Flash Forward.

The chick that played Supergirl is the HOTTEST! I didn't watch it so I don't know if she even "appeared" yet. I did catch some of the original on SyFy and forgot how good & cheesey it was.

Suck.

That's this show.

I don't want to go crapping on something without seeing it first (unless it's god awful), so I watched it.

Spoiler:
So the V are now terrorists that have already been here? Really? That's where they're going with this?! They're pulling the fucking "terrorist" card?!!

One of the coolest aspects of the original series was the aliens visiting Earth, being unsure of their plans, and then shitting a brick when you realize they've already dug into the planet and "what now?".

Maybe because the twist of their origin is no longer a secret, just MAYBE they shouldn't have re-done this series, hunh?

Spoiler:
(ABC Executive #1: "Nah! Let's re-do "V" but make it like "24". "24V!" We can market that! Instead of Jack Bauer, we'll have JILL Bauer! Bring in a few supporting characters, make the lead alien hot, get a few critics from some Internet news sites to call it "hip" and "happening" and we're golden!"

(One of the actors from last night's show) "What weapon? What weapon do they have? Hunh? What weapon?" - actual dialogue. Really?

I'm done.

I'm totally unfamiliar with the original and I dug last nights premiere. I hope it performed well ratings-wise, I love me some Juliet.

I thought it too much was going on in such little of time. I don’t know how I feel about the movie being turned into a TV show. I love a good reptilian conspiracy but how far can they take it? This is all just propaganda for the government staged "Alien" attack in 2012 to get everyone on the one world government bandwagon like 9/11.

I agree. I'm in no way familiar with the original series (or movie?) but it felt like everything was happening so fast. I still enjoyed it and will probably check out the next episode to see how the show progresses.

Rusty, I don't see how it's like 24...at least so far. The only common thread is 'terrorists'...so far.

What the hell @ the pilot?

Spoiler:

They sure killed Tudyk's character really quickly. He'll mysteriously come back, probably. I mean they are cloned human flesh, if i recall correctly. According to IMDb he's in the next episode. But it's IMDb.

Good, I really like Alan Tudyk, and was a bit sad to see him killed off so quickly. I hope this mini-Firefly reunion lasts a bit longer.

Finally caught the pilot and I loved it. Not quite as good as FlashForward's pilot, but damn close! These are definitely my two favorite new shows.

It's a good thing we're getting some good new shows since it's possible this season will see the end of 4 of my favorite tv shows!

That would be Lost, 24... and? Just curious.

I liked it as well. Pulled me right in. I agree with some complaints. Some of the weird camera angles stood out too much. It did feel like they crammed a lot in. But the characters are very interesting and I'm interested in seeing what happens.

Right on the first two. The other two are Supernatural and Numb3rs.

There was absolutely no feeling of this mammoth, worldwide event actually happening. It was like they thought the audience would lose interest at the first instance of a slight lull in proceedings, so they decided instead to cram every single second with plot developments, awkward exposition, explosions, CGI spectacles or fight sequences.

The dialogue too was just terrible - how did the conversation about the kid's video on YouTube turn into a talk about how he's acting out because his father is not around?

They've already given away the aliens' true intentions and the genesis of the Resistance (which will probably pale in comparison to the masterful episodes chronicling the resistance against Cylons on New Caprica). How can they possibly keep this going?

Without letting the audience invest in the characters and absorb the magnitude of the aliens arriving, all the twists had no impact and I was just bored.

I'm currently rewatching BSG with a friend (who's watching for the first time), and he feels like the characters don't act like they are the last 40,000 people left of humanity. I never noticed.

But yeah, this show definitely glosses over the kind of effects you would have from such a world-changing event. Maybe they will cover that better in the future.

Something that bugged me was the applause after Anna's message. I'd think there'd still be people freaking out.

What bothered me the most was the fact that people were already taking tours to the ships and signing up in the youth programs and everything in like 2 days... I would think people would be a little more wary...

You must not have been paying attention. It was three weeks later. Although that does still seem a bit soon. Then again, it astounds me just how stupid people are sometimes so who knows if that is actually believable.

This says it all for me.
Well put.

But the critics that they paid for the reviews LOVED it.

One of my stomach churning favorites: "V...will rock you."

I fucking hate people sometimes....

You know, you've always struck me as an intelligent and "with it" individual.
Are you trying to tell me that you've never heard of "reviewers" that are known for giving mid level to bad TV shows / movies "wonderous" reviews?

That's what I'm getting at here. While it's just my opinion on it being a crappy show, what in the blue hell warranted "V...will...rock you" to be offered to us?

That's corn we don't deserve.

Pshaw, I think Morena may be the most beautiful thing Ive laid eyes on.

This show stunk. I havent seen (or even know anything about) the original series or plot in general. But I was hoping, HOPING, we might get a band of people who take up a mis-guided resistance and become an extremist group - all the while not knowing for certain if the Vs are "bad" or not.

The uncertainty, the paranoia, thats what I was really hoping for and we get this right away. The paranoia will now come but it will have lost all its impact.

I wasn't a big fan of the pilot as it had about 3 episodes worth of plot into one compressed episode. And I wasn't very swayed by the Scott Wolf plotline of a conflicted newsman since realistically, there are tons of broadcasters who would be easily fine with showing them in a positive light

Well they're trying to add some sort of 'interesting' angle to his character.

This show still has me intrigued so I will continue watching. Yeah the teenage son moments are definitely cringeworthy but I'm interested to see how his character progresses (from the look of next week's ep he gets a little friendly with Lisa pretty fast.)
