Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag(10/29/2013)

We will be announcing all the details of Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag on Monday March 4 at 6pm CET. Stay tuned for more.
- Ubisoft (via FACEBOOK)

-------MORE INFO----------------------------

The Examiner reports that the main character in Black Flag is Edward
Kenway, the father of Haytham Kenway from last year's Assassin's Creed III. Edward is
described as a privateer, assassin, and "occasional" pirate.

--- Update via 2/30----

Some Internet sleuthing by the folks over at DarkZero have turned up a graphic on
Ubisoft's official website for Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag revealing an
October 29, 2013 release date. The graphic has since been removed or hidden,
but the damage has already been done.

The graphic also promises a world premiere trailer for the sequel set in the Caribbean during the time of pirates, as well as stating the game is "also coming to next-gen consoles." Sony's PS4 announced last week will likely be one of those consoles, as will Nintendo's Wii U and Microsoft's next Xbox that has yet to be formally unveiled.

'Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag' confirmed for PS4

As the prior week's leaks suggested, Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag will boast next-generation ports ... rendered by the PlayStation 4. (Here you go.)

Speaking to Joystiq in San Francisco last month, Assassin's Creed 4 game director Ashraf Ismail said the AnvilNext engine, which powers Ubisoft's pirate game and debuted with Assassin's Creed 3 in 2012, was built for platforms beyond the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii U.

Ubisoft hasn't confirmed a launch date for the PS4 version yet, since the exact timing is entwined with Sony's guarded launch plans. All other versions of Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag (that we know of) are due on October 29 in North America.

the Premise of 'BLACK FLAG'

Premise

As is the case in previous games in the Assassin's Creed series, the story is divided into two intertwined halves, with one in the present day, one in a historical setting, and the events of each influencing the other.

In the present day, the player character is hired by Abstergo Entertainment — a subsidiary of Abstergo Industries — to use the Animus and examine the memories of Desmond Miles and his ancestors. Although it had previously been established that the Animus may only be used to view the memories of one's direct ancestors, the ending of Assassin's Creed III implies that the Animus is now functioning in the same way as a cloud computer. Faced with this new possibility, Abstergo has requested that the player concentrate specifically on the memories of the Assassin Edward Kenway, a notorious pirate and privateer living in the Golden Age of Piracy. Kenway's story is set in the Caribbean, and mixes open-ended ship-based exploration with combat and land-based adventures on a number of Caribbean islands.

Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag is a story of debauchery and absolution

According to ans interview with McDevitt on Polygon, in the game, Edward Kenway and his wife have issues because of his penchant for a little ménage now and then, plus he’s a true pirate in the sense that he tends to be a “raucous and bawdy chap.”

However, despite all his flaws, he’s set out upon the high seas in order to become rich, and thus redeem himself in the eyes of his family and society. He better not catch syplllis then. That might piss the ole wifey off a bit.

“His primary motivation in Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag is to get rich and prove himself a ‘man of quality’ to his family and betters,” said McDevitt. “So there is a special woman in Edward’s life, but there are also other not-so-special women as well.”

Some of theses “not-so-special” women will come in handy for the pirate, because as an NPC, they can be directed to distract targets using the timeless art of seduction.

Such a scenario was also depicted in the announcement trailer.

“While this scene in the reveal trailer was clearly designed hint at the pirate lifestyle, there is a gameplay element here, to show that you can use certain NPC characters to more effectively achieve your goals,” said McDevitt. “You might have noticed that the woman [who was part of the earlier ménage] in the foreground seduced his target at the end of the trailer.”

As will all games in the series, everything is scripted – no choices in who you form bonds with – but it will still be more “open and free than ever before,” and Kenway will even run across famous pirates such as Anne Bonny.

The Present Day Part of Assassin's Creed IV Is a First-Person Adventure

Ubisoft likes to keep the modern parts of its Assassin's Creed games as secret as possible. But at E3, they revealed a few details for the present day part of ACIV: Black Flag. For starters, you're the main character.

You'll be playing in the present as an employee of Abstergo Entertainment, the fictional video game company that's part of the series' anti-Assassin company and Templar front, Abstergo. You'll have a job at the company. A desk. Your own computer. You'll also be able to dive into the past of legendary assassins like Assassin's Creed IV lead, the 18th-century pirate-turned-Assassin Edward Kenway. "We want you to feel like you have your own Animus," the game's writer Darby McDevitt told me today during a show-closing demo of the game.

McDevitt and co. weren't showing the modern stuff. He was showing me Kenway gameplay—the same demo our Kirk Hamilton recently wrote about. McDevitt did at least describe the modern parts as a "first-person adventure." He declined to clarify whether the modern parts would involve combat, but he said players would be able to poke around a lot, get involved in the modern drama of the Assassins and Abstergo and learn a lot about what's going on in the game's post-ACIII status quo.

There will be e-mails and videos to find as well as chunks of what will combine into a 40-minute radio play. That last one was included, McDevitt said, because he recently realized he wanted a way to experience part of his games while he is cooking in his kitchen. Let the inspiration come from wherever, man!

Characters will talk to you as if you're in the world, sort of like you're Gordon Freeman from the Half-Life games, he offered.

It's from the modern era that PlayStation players will be able to access three platform-exclusive missions (likely timed-exclusive, if history tells us anything) that let them go through adventures as Assassin's Creed III: Liberation protagonist Aveline de Grandpré. McDevitt. McDevitt advised me to imagine that we'd be able to sit down at another Abstergo Entertainment employee's computer and dive into Aveline's experiences. I suggested that the developers could use that concept to let us play in missions of other Assassins. He replied by saying that someone else had asked if the series' other protagonists would be in the game. All would at least be mentioned, he said.

We'll have more on Assassin's Creed IV in the months to come. The game will be out this fall for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and Wii U.
