Favorite performance from Magnolia

Ah, the beauty that is Magnolia. I love this film so much and everything in it - definitely including its amazingly talented ensemble cast. A friend and I were having a discussion the other day about which performance by which actor was our favorite - and I'll be damned if it wasn't tough as hell to decide.

Which performance from this incredible ensemble is your favorite?

The end credits. There I am thinking this depressing 3 hour bore of a film would never end when suddenly...they swooped in and ended my misery.

Tom Cruise - he delivers one of the best lines every spoken:
Quote:
Gwenovier: Come on, Frank. What are you doing?

Frank T.J. Mackey: What am I doing? I'm quietly judging you.

I always thought that while, yes, Tom Cruise was fantastic in this movie, still, I thought it was unfair to single him out when really everyone was fantastic in this movie. Not a weak performance in the entire movie. No one really stands out.

Cruise, Macy, Moore, Reilly, Hall, Walters. I just can't decide. They are all great.

Are you being sarcastic? Because I thought I remember you not being a fan of this movie.

Very hard choice indeed, but I have to give it to Jason Robards. That "Goddamn regret" monologue...whew.

When I view it now, I can only watch the Cruise/Julianne/Hoffman/Robards scenes...but Tom truly stole the show among one of the best ensemble casts ever in the role of his career: Frank T.J. Mackey!

They are all excellent, but Cruise is the one that sticks out the most in my mind.

I also had to go Frank T.J. Mackey.

Favorite performance from Magnolia

My top five would be:

1) Julianne Moore
2) Tom Cruise
3) John C. Reilly
4) Philip Baker Hall
5) Philip Seymour Hoffman

I saw the film nearly a week ago for the first time. I found it utterly mesmerizing and captivating for the entire three-hour run. I even really liked Tom Cruise, and I don't usually. This is his best work. Paul Thomas Anderson is great at working with actors and pulling their strengths to the foreground.

Now, having seen all of his films, I still say Boogie Nights is my favorite, but Magnolia gets the silver medal.

Hoffman. He became my favorite actor when I watched that movie for the first time. Julianne Moore was also amazing.
Tom cruise's part was my least favorite. But still liked it.
