Goyer Talks Batman Oct. 9, 2008
Source: MTV
by: Daniel Barna

Since the release of the THE DARK KNIGHT, it seems all anyone (including myself) can talk about is the inevitable follow up. Depp as The Riddler? Check. Phillip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin? Check. Ellen DeGeneres as Robin? Err...probably. Speculating on Batman 3 rumours has become a sport of sorts, and it's on the verge of overtaking Baseball as America's favorite pastime.

Well all you educated prognosticators and fanboys alike (is there a difference?), it's officially time to put a proverbial sock in it. David Goyer, the man who had a hand in writing both Batman films and who is a close, personal friend of Chris Nolan, has put all the rumours to rest in one fell swoop. In a recent interview with MTV, he had this to say about all the rumours:

It’s all B.S. ALL of it.

It doesn't get much more blunt than that folks. But Goyer wasn't even close to done. He went on to cast further uncertainty as to whether or not Nolan will remain at the helm of the franchise.

Chris and I haven’t even talked about it. He quite understandably is taking a long, long vacation and wants to purge himself. We have mused here and there [but] I mean Chris is pretty much a one movie at a time kind of guy. I wish I could tell you more. There really isn’t anything to tell. If and when [Chris is] ready to talk - we’ll talk.

So there you have it. All rumours have officially been squashed. Now we can all go back to talking about cinematic issues that really matter. So does anyone know who is playing the villain in BEVERLY HILLS CHIHUAHUA 2?

Extra Tidbit: Goyer refers to all the online rumours as "amusing".

IN ANSWER TO THE QUESTION...
.. a very angry dachshund.

TDK was part of the Origins story.
The first movie setup Batman.
The seconds movie setup Gotham City. It set up a city where weird nutters are the criminals instead of mere Gangsters. The Joker being the seed that produces the likes of Two Face and the others to come.

I'd like to see where they take the story next. But all in their own good time.

As others have said this article doesn't really tell us anything new, it just reconfirms what we already knew.

I can perfectly understand Nolan not wanting to do a third, because it'll be very hard to top TDK, and if he doesn't somehow manage to pull it off the fans will be mad. Aaron Eckhart has said that as far as he could tell they were planning to bring back Ledger for a third film I think this has been part of the dilemma.

Picture this: You've just made one of the most critically praised action films in history and everybody's clammoring for a sequel when the the best part of your movie, the actor you were planning to use as the villain in the follow up dies. Suddenly your whole plan for a part three goes down the drain. If that was the case I can see where you'd want to take some time off and ponder over whether it's even worth it to come up with another sequel idea.

However this series is Nolan's baby and I'm relatively confident that the fear of WB hiring another director if he says no, combined with the obscene amount of cash they'll throw at him will eventually persuade him to say yes.

On a side not my friends and I have put a ridiculous amount of time into outlining what we think a good third film would look like.

Well I hope Nolan isn't literally 'purging', because that is NOT a healthy way to maintain one's weight.

Just hoping against a "batman forever" situation where the director bails (taking on a producing role instead), and we get some shitty hack-ass director to fill in, taking the series in a completely different and shittier direction.

In other words, please don't let Brett Ratner anywhere near this franchise, please!!!!

Most educated people knew these were never true, as even the idea for a story hasn't been conceived yet.

I really hope Nolan comes back. Let him take a vacation and do another movie if he wants. But I think a 3rd batman would give some more closure to the series. We don't even have a batcave yet (which was hinted at in the end of batman begins).

Chris, take a serious breather! TDK had to be beyond stressful, physically and emotionally. And if you don't end up coming back, we (most of us) will understand.
