With the (seemingly) much-anticipated double feature GRINDHOUSE having a case of box office erectile dysfunction, Hollywood insiders and online journalists immediately speculated on the causes quicker than Tarantino can deliver a complete sentence. It's too long! Too violent! Too self-indulgent! Too hyped! Released on the wrong weekend! Audiences didn't "get" it! Milk Duds pull out my fillings! And so on.
Now comes the wicked rumor that the Weinstein machine known as Harvey was so utterly disappointed by the fiscal reaming that he's actually considering the notion of slashing the package into two distinct flicks and tossing them at screens separately -- in just a few weeks! Harvey points to the fact that this was the global release plan all along: "By splitting it up, we're going to do a hell of a lot better internationally than we did here."
This has to sting -- the Weinsteins haven't exactly churned out the hits since wandering off on their own, with a catalog and slate littered with expensive projects, foreign acquisitions and genre flicks that were all basically dead on arrival (including, ironically, DOA). And now even their two Golden Boys in tandem can't open a flick to much more than what the equally graphic 300 pulled in its fourth week of release.
Of course, just striking prints of the proposed solo cuts seems like it would be to further financial detriment, let alone the price tag of re-promoting the flicks, so who knows what'll happen. At least the fans will likely get a (probably bare-bones) DVD release with all alacrity in a ham-handed attempt to recoup cost quickly. As for why the project tanked at the box office, I stick with William Goldman's Hollywood theory: "Nobody knows anything."
Extra Tidbit:
Tarantino and Rodriguez have previously directed segments of one project: 1995's FOUR ROOMS. And we know how that turned out...

USA JUST FUCKIN SUCKS!!!
Yeaaa that's right! I fuckin said it! I mean really,... Grindhouse kicked my ass and left me for dead on the side of the road. Best Movie Experience Of My Life! I think if it had some sort of 9/11 reference or someone come through the film and say "YAY! USA IS #1!!!" then the box office scores will be better. But Of course, the mass Republican based nation always has the final say in stupid ass decisions around here... and they think Grindhouse is too violent, too long and they just don't get it...AHAHA What a bunch of bible-humping douchebags. Let's just take a huge shit on their chests and call it a day |

A SAD DAY...
I saw the movie this past weekend and... Wow!!! It was one of the best movie experiences of my life. It's sad when a horrible re-hash, "Are we done yet?", beats out an original, fresh, and kick-ass movie like "GrindHouse". Tell all your friends and family to watch it. We need to support original movies like Grindhouse or theaters will keep throwing out garbage for us to watch. |

Read the tidbit, mentions : "segments", not codirected the same. Becauswe four rooms has 4 completely distinct stories. |

TREATING EUROPE LIKE SHIT
Thanks for that, Harvey.
Btw, that 'extra tidbit' is a little redundant when there's From Dusk Till Dawn and Sin City out there too... |

i agree with the comment below me. I saw grindhouse yesterday and i thought that it was a great film, but the whole presmise wasnt mainstream. I loved the movie and to split it in two would just to make a quick buck at the expense of destroying a whole movie. The Weinstein company has been sucking at every thing they have popped out. When Grindhouse didnt deliver to their unattainable expectations, they jump the gun. Face it, Grindhouse is a film that demands a new, fresh and original audience, something America isnt used to seeing these days at the multiplex. |

The integrity of the film is that it IS a double feature. They just picked one of the worst weekends for release. It being too long or violent has nothing to do with it. Hell, I'm going to see it again this weekend. Just Easter weekend was a "family at the multiplex" weekend and not the target audience. They should just wait, its only been one weekend! This thing is going to bank, it just needs to travel by WOM first. I'm spreading word that this thing is badass and I just read Entertainment Weekly gave it an A. Give it time! |

NO OPTION HERE...
Some distribution dicks over here in The Netherlands decided to put Grindhouse out as seperate moves right away. I was really looking forward to the classical grindhouse feel the whole package offers, but now that whole concept is down the drain thanks to the moneyleeches.
It hurts man, it hurts! In this age of movies that suck like no movie sucked before, even the good stuff gets mutilated and less interesting in the end. Do they even want us to go to theathers lately? |

MOVIE WAS GREAT
They shouldn't do it, they should just let it go, they took a gamble and they lost, big deal don't change it. But people are right a lot of the younger people just didn't know what a Grindhouse was. Every time i asked if people were gonna see it the first thing they ask is... whats that.. then when i explained it they be like ahhh i dont think ill see that. : / so who knows. But i wouldn't break it up thats just defeating the whole purpose of the movie. Screw the ppl who didn't get what it was.
And whats different from this holiday that works for all the other major holidays out there? |
