Grindhouse split for DVD Jun. 11, 2007

It is being reported now that Quentin Tarantino's DEATH PROOF will be released - without PLANET TERROR - on DVD, on September 18th of this year. Genius Entertainment and the Weinstein Co. will be responsible. To be honest, I'm completely baffled by pretty much everything that has happened since GRINDHOUSE was released in cinemas. It's difficult to get over the fact that the thing tanked at the box-office, even more difficult for me to understand how the only talk of sequels has been Eli Roth discussing some flick that is composed solely of trailers, but perhaps the most difficult for me to understand is that DEATH PROOF seems to be getting all the glory. I know I'm not alone, because I talked about this before (and got a bunch of e-mails from schmoes voicing their agreement), in the view that PLANET TERROR was the vastly superior flick. I like DEATH PROOF, and some of the dialogue in it is a nod to Tarantino's best, but to be honest I was getting bored during some of the conversations between hot chicks. And whether that was intended - as I've heard some people say - is irrelevant. PLANET TERROR was just such a ride the whole way through, great cheesy fun, and really, really funny. Admittedly, I haven't seen the DEATH PROOF that was shown at Cannes, but I can't see how the flick could be improved to such an extent as to make it more enjoyable than TERROR. Here's hoping that PLANET TERROR gets its own DVD release soon.

Extra Tidbit: Rodriguez actually wrote the first 30 pages of PLANET TERROR back in 1998.

To everyone complaining about the split, quit crying and read the following quote by Tarantino.

"Me and Robert made three movies. We made Death Proof, Planet Terror and then we made Grindhouse. Death Proof and Planet Terror were always meant to stand alone. But when we put them together as Grindhouse, it had to work as one evening. So we didn't cut our movies to the bone; we cut them past the bone.”

or not you prefer one over the other is irrevelavent (and in fact there seems to be an equal split between the 2) so the first part of this article is useless. The only thing that is important to point out is that together they are a film. GRINDHOUSE, with all of it's parts is the damn movie and not Grindhouse in half. Period. Weinstein has been off the game since the Disney split and this is the latest bungle. If they want to release the films on their own fine, but at least put them out there the way they were intended too.

I agree. Releasing them on two DVDs is dumb. If they really wanted to squeeze money out of consumers, they should have released them on two DVDs but in a double feature pack, therefore justifying charging twice as much for a movie that is technically supposed to be together. I liked Planet Terror a hundred times more anyway. Death Proof had way too much irrelevant dialogue.

I'm going to diss Planet Terror a little more since some people can't get over the fact that there is some value to diverse opinions. Planet Terro was less of a grindhouse film than Death Proof, ok? Both were flawed, both were enjoyable.

I'm hearing a lot about how the film was "meant to be seen", but the double feature is how it was meant to be seen in theaters, maybe not necessarily the way it was meant to be seen in the home. I'd be curious to hear what the directors think of this move. My guess is that they're totally cool with it.

p.s. TheFilmFreak, I'm confused. Grindhouse is "the greatest movie i have ever seen", yet "Death Proof sucked"?

I doubt it is just me, but it irraitates me to no end that no one went to see this flick! But yet "Are we there yet" made more money, and the crappy "Wild Hogs" made almost 10 times that?! I am one of the reasons the movie tanked. I thought they were both horrible, and made sure i let people know my opinion. To split up the grindhouse movies negates the entire concept of the original movie. It was made to be a cheesy double feature. Releasing them seperately just shows you the ploys by these companies to rip off their fans. They want more money, plain and simple. I would say boycot them, but all the fanboys will be buying those movies up. Too bad that less than 12 months later, they will have to shell out more of their hard earned cash for the super ultimate concession stand boxset edition with a free bag of kettle corn.

Grindhouse was IMO the greatest movie i have ever seen. And i also loved Planet Terror way more then death proof. Planet Terror had the hotter chicks as well. I dont see why everyone thinks that the girls in death proof where good looking. Only Rose Mcgowan was hot in her role in death proof. Not to mention smoking hot as cherry in planet terror. Planet Terror was also the better story with the better actors and the most fun and gore that i have ever seen. Death Proof didnt even have the scratches on the film to give it the grindhouse feel. I am very pissed that its been split thow, and to be honest i probably wont buy death proof (if i even buy the crap fest at all) untill planet terror (the greatest zombie movie ever) comes out on dvd seeing it was the better of the 2 but what i also dont get is that by splitting the movies it takes away the whole grindhouse feel. I dont understand this shit at all. And yes THE WEINSTEINS ARE ASSHOLES! I dont see why Robert didnt just put this movie out himself with out them fucking assholes. And to who ever disses planet terror can shut the fuck up! Why do you think planet terror was first, If death proof was first people would have left the movies because of how boring it was.

BECAUSE THAT'S NOT HOW "GRINDHOUSE" WAS INTENDED TO BE SEEN... THAT'S WHY!

It's a double feature, for fuck's sake! To split the films apart on DVD basically throws the concept of "Grindhouse" right out the window.

Unless the Weinsteins decide to release "Grindhouse" on a 2-3 disc DVD the way it was supposed to be seen, I refuse to buy the single, split up DVDs.

Both parts were good. But together, they were perfect. The movie was so enjoyable because it captured the feel of seeing a double feature. Watching it on a small screen already would diminish that. But breaking it into chunks, with "Missing Reels" presumably restored? That strips the experience away, leaving you with one bad zombie movie on one disc and a cheap car movie on another.

How much you want to bet that they will just release both of these movies as seperate DVDs and then re-release it in the future as one whole DVD complete with extras that will attract all the hardcore fans of the film and the genre? The Weinsteins are the worst businessmen in the film industry and they really need to quit while they can! They're destroying cinema no matter how much they claim to 'love' cinema! I'm in complete agreement with CVD's "Another Thing" - Rodriguez did not emulate but rather made a fanboyish homage that didn't feel anything like it was from the 70's. (and guys, don't take that as a slam against Rodriguez in general. Sure I have yet to actually like any of his films but he's clearly got a great method)

Anyway as for the split... I was actually hoping for it. I'd love to watch Death Proof again and again without feeling like I have to sit through Planet Terror. For my own personal sake, I'm all for it. I do hope, however, that a special edition after DVD sales show well (which I think they will... at least rentals will go like crazy) is on the way and will preserve the entire experience as a double feature.

I don't know why Tarantino went off on his own to extend this movie and separate from Grindhouse. This was my all-time favorite movie made by my two favorite directors. I enjoyed Death Proof more. Not as exciting, but smarter, and it was at least trying to do something interesting. Planet Terror was fun, but I thought it should have ended sooner. By the time they got to that scene with Tarantino, I was checking my watch.

Seriously, is anyone that surprised that they're breaking it up? This movie was practically BORN to exploit the wallets of DVD hounds. First you buy Death Proof, then you buy Planet Terror, then you buy the combined theatrical release, then you buy the extended versions in a boxed set. I think the only surprise is that they started with Death Proof.

But, as soon as DEATH PROOF came on, you could hear a pin drop in the theater. People started walking out, and I practically fell asleep.

It's a shame that they want to split this. When will the Weinsteins admit that it's their fault for releasing a THREE HOUR horror movie that was poorly promoted. When you sell your product as CHEESE, expect people not to take YOU, or your film seriously.

My opinion, of course, is that Death Proof can stand the test of time and stand as a great film in its own right. It takes the foundation of the Grindhouse films and goes beyond them by creating a unique piece of cinema. Planet Terror attempts to recreate the look and feel of those films with better visual effects, but in the end it was pretty predictable, and got dull at least 30min before it was over. As for the dialogue in Death Proof, I was pretty much just watching the movie unfold, just like I do with every other movie, and I didn't know where that long middle convo would bring us, so it was great. I had a great time watching it, and I wish more movies offered as much originality as Death Proof. Looking forward to the new version... and finally I'm glad I don't have to buy Planet Terror... I would have taken them together, but in the end those movies don't belong packaged together.

Whaaat?!? So hold on, this means that there won't actually be a "Grindhouse" DVD, just "DP" and "PT" separately, or they'll release them separately now and put out a full DVD in the future, or ... what the f*ck? Why...

Why not just put out a nice DVD of "Grindhouse" followed by (hopefully) "Machete?" Is that really too much to ask?

Planet Terror was the better Grindhouse movie, but Death Proof was a better movie in general.
