Grindhouse split update Apr. 17, 2007
Source: JoBlo.com
by: Mike Sampson

We received some reports over the weekend and yesterday from some readers saying their local theaters were running the GRINDHOUSE films separately or running them together with an intermission instead of the fake trailers. Curious, we did our best Carl Monday impression and did some investigative reporting. Was this the case of some rogue theater owners splitting GRINDHOUSE on their own? Had The Weinstein Co. officially re-released GRINDHOUSE as two separate films - "Planet Terror" and "Death Proof." After some digging and talking and e-mailing and harassing, we were able to find out the truth. It seems in the wake of the opening weekend disaster, the Weinsteins, as they widely admitted to, considered splitting the films. Being the Weinsteins, they did what they do best: they tested. Last weekend they tested various concepts of improving GRINDHOUSE business in select theaters including two of the various methods above. None of the methods seemed to have any positive effect on box-office receipts and word I got from inside the Weinstein Co. last night was that the plan to split GRINDHOUSE in two and re-release was very likely kiboshed. So that could be it for the GRINDHOUSE experiment folks. Just left to die a slow death and develop a cult following on home video, not unlike....well grindhouse movies.

As much as I liked Grindhouse I think its a good idea in a way. Okay you lose the grindhouse experience of you seprate them films but you get to enjoy more each films individually. Lots of people thought Death Proof was a let down but its just cause they were expecting a second Planet Terror which is kinda stupid.

THANK GOD FOR THAT
Splitting Grindhouse up was SUCH a dumb, cynical idea. But is it still the case that they're planning to split it for the Europe release anyway? Weinstein's said that in an interview before. As a UK resident, I'd be so pissed off if the US gets to keep the proper version but the rest of the world is still treated like shit...

RETARDED
These movies will lose a lot of the charm that they had in theaters if they split them up in my opinion. Its just a real shame that more people didnt see this awesome movie.

ggfunk, The movies are so intense, you wont even notice that they were long.

It kinda like this: Movies Starts - Holy Shit! - Movies are over - That Was Awesome!

Here's hoping that along with a regular DVD release in the near future we also get seperate releases... Death Proof was quite awesome but Planet Terror was mostly uninspired, imo. wetoldyouwhattodream.blogspot.com for further opinionation if you want to argue with me.

AWW... SADNESS
I would rather the movie never had existed than have it split. Those movies are like apples and apple skins. They need each other or they get all brown and sticky. Grindhouse left me with perma-smile for the entire week after I saw it. I don't see how a movie can be too long either. First of all, it's 2 movies. Second of all, we pay too much damn money for a ticket to any movie. The longer the better I say. I think if they leave it alone and accept the modest payback they're getting, it will catch on. It's way too much of an important film to have it's artistic integrity fucked around with.

A BIT TOO LONG FOR ME.
I'd love to see GH in the theater, but it's hard for this movie fan to admit, the movie is too damn long to sit through.

DVD WILL HAVE MORE EXPERIMENTING
YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST FOLKS!!
I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels that they will be released on two separate DVDs. PLANET TERROR will be one release, and DEATH PROOF the other. Probably will have all the trailers, or half on each release. For $19.99 each. Then, 6 months to a year later there will be a Mega-Three-Disc "Full Grindhouse Experience!" release in three discs, with both movies "As They Were Meant To Be Seen!" and extras. So, the theatrical experimentation is through, but the project is far from over.

THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN A STUPID MOVE.
If they split it in 2, they might have as well just taken the whole grindhouse title off of it.
