Guillermo del Toro will finally make At the Mountains of Madness -- with James Cameron!

Strike Back below!
by: Dave Davis Jul. 28, 2010

Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro played coy all last weekend at Comic Con regarding his next directorial effort. In panels and interviews, he would only reveal that his grand plan would be announced soon.

According to Deadline, that project is... his longtime passion project AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS! And it will be shot in 3D! And James Cameron will be producing!

Any part of that news would be extremely cool, but the elements together make for some exponential excitement. Cameron's involvement was obviously what convinced Universal to give the go-ahead to del Toro for what has long been considered an expensive but non-commercial project (it kicked around different studios throughout the past decade). Blessed be the Old Ones!

The story, based on a novella by HP Lovecraft, follows an Antarctic expedition's discovery of a lost civilization, and all the expected nightmarish slimy freakbeasts and ancient tentacled god-creatures that entails.

I love HP Lovecraft, Guillermo, and Cameron (though Titanic and Avatar do nothing for me). However, I really don't like 3D... I'm still looking forward to this because I love Lovecraft SO much, but the 3D part makes me a bit nervous.

Cameron??? Del Toro!!!!!
While im dubious about the cameron involvment (avatar people!!)I am glad a project as dark and epic as this will hit the screens. I hve not heard of mountains of madness but if the great man wants to make it then hell hes got my cash already and i know his beasts will be kickass i just hope he doesnt let the fiasco that was the hobbit stop him from pulling all the stops out

Cameron Haters = Morons
You guys hating on James Cameron are complete morons. Please stop posting on this site. He is so lame because?!???? This man makes entertaining movies. I am sorry if you didnt like titanic or thought AVATAR was not up to your artistic standards. When you hate on a director like Cameron, and have no apparent reasoning to back it up with, it makes you look like a tool.

Relax. We're all allowed our opinion.

"Cameron Haters", as you put it, are in the minority which is why we speak up. Most of us didn't post anything mean. Just opinion.

And posting something with name calling doesn't help your cause. And many of us do have our reasons for disliking Cameron. We just don't bother wasting our time on people we know won't listen to us.

Holy shit. This is going to be so incredibly epic. Shot in 3D under the supervision of James Cameron?? All you 3D haters apparently didn't see the same Avatar I saw. A 3D H.P. Lovecraft movie directed by our current best fantasy director, produced by possibly the smartest "tech" man in the industry? Yes, please.

YES!!!!! and Noooooooo!!!
I've been into HPL since I was a teen. The string of piss-poor HPL-inspired movies for decades has been such a disappointment. Only an epic, like AtMoM, and an epic-capable director like GdT could potentially break this long dry spell. But what's this? James "everything in 3D, anything for a buck, I rock out loud" Cameron is attached? My hopes dwindle....

Bunch of ungrateful pricks hating on Cameron, why, because Avatar is popular? Because 3D annoys you? Who gives a crap about you and your Fanbagger opinions, this is a great collaboration, hopefully this is done ASAP.

I really don't mind the 3D part - I'm pretty sure they'll use Cameron's Fusion 3D technology. This sounds extremely promising, hopefully it'll be as dark as the book.

I think James Cameron is a questionable writer but a skilled director. It seems like the complaints with Cameron's films are only associated with his writing (like the complaint that Avatar took many of the ideas from other films). However, he is only producing, and he is well versed in 3D technology, so why complain?
