Hobbit casting rumors Jul. 16, 2009

Source: LA Times

Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson are gearing up for their live-action adaptation(s) of THE HOBBIT, and they have undoubtedly been giving serious thought to an appropriate (and available) actor for diminutive adventurer Bilbo Baggins.

Word has it that the grand announcement may be delivered at Comic Con, but why not guess right now? The LA Times has tossed out a few names for the part, including the oft-mentioned James McAvoy (WANTED, CHRONICLES OF NARNIA), kid-wizard Daniel Radcliffe (HARRY POTTER, yeah), and an intriguing new submission: recent Dr. Who David Tennant.

While Radcliffe seems unlikely (his fantasy franchise committal remains at Hogwart's) and McAvoy has been a fan favorite, Tennant could be a dark horse to be shrunken into Tolkein's little wanderer -- not only does he seem to have a fairly open post-Who schedule (which he'd need for the projects' considerable involvement), but he also happens to be attending Comic Con next week for "Dr. Who". Hmmm.

Extra Tidbit: Tennant shared the screen with fellow theoretical hobbit Radcliffe as Barty Crouch Junior in GOBLET OF FIRE.

Tell me if I'm wrogn but wouldn't Jamie Bell be great candidate for this role as well. He has the spritey personality yet the seemingly mature ambiance about him as well. Just a thought

We just need a DeLorean with a flux capacitor and the location of Ian Holm on July 17th, 1987.

I'm not a fan of Mcavoy, and I haven't seen Tennant in much. I would most like Freeman to get the role.

I think this is one of those things where we just get them all and a room and let them battle for it.

good thing DelToro is handling this, cause storywise Jackson&co. sure needs some reining in. And they better give the trolls some big noses this time.

While he definitely has the perfect looks for the role, he is just a little TOO comedic in my mind. I know THE HOBBIT is a lot lighter in tone than the trilogy, and that Bilbo is actually quite a funny character in general, but I really can't shake the idea that Freeman’s association with comedy will undermine the seriousness of the film. Imagine his face on the poster with a surprised expression… it’ll seem like wacky comedy.

David Tennant though? Now that's an interesting choice I never considered.

Oh please give it to Tennant! He's just absolutely terrific! Yeah, he's like six foot something, but if they can shrink John Rhys Davies, they'll have no problem shrinking The Doctor. Go Tennant!

i fully expect these Hobbit films to be better than LotR. A lighter tone with a better filmmaker behind the camera.

As far as casting goes, i've always championed Martin Freeman (Hitchhicker's Guide, original Office, Love Actually) for Biblo. I think he is perfect. I really, really like the idea of David Tennant too. I absolutely hate the idea of James McAvory> I never minded him until Wanted, where he annoyed the crap out of me that kind of tainted his image.
