This is the last installment of the second of the quarterfinals that I've been running for the past few weeks now. We started off with the poppiest of the pop - those young femme non-fatales from the Nick/Disney demo. We're in the middle of wandering around, with a win for Nelly Furtado out of Canada, a win for Joss Stone out of England and now... who will win the semifinal position from Australia, the place where it's always fun to go down under?
I was a little kid when I recall Kylie doing the locomotion and my parents ruining it for me by explaining that it was a remake. The 80's sucked a lot of the life out of what had come before them but Kylie was so much fun, with such a big smile and a siren personality. Later on I saw her as more of an actress than a singer (I still love BIO-DOME, don't judge me!) until 2000 when the red-hot "Spinning Around" got dropped along with a video of Kylie kicking those impossibly long legs for a short girl, writing on a bar and shaking her tight tush changed a lot of people's minds.
It's hard to believe that it's been 16 years since the signal jamming, stuck in your head for days song "Torn" was released. Probably helped that the song was coming from a cute Aussie chick with a boyish bob and a fairy's whisper of a voice. She definitely has the "Wrong Impression" about it being hard to look at her. Totally got to contradict that.
There's something to be said for the Idols who don't finish high in their competitions, American or otherwise. Lisa Mitchell made it to 6th on Australian Idol and later started releasing songs like "Coin Laundry" that gave me the happy vibe of a female solo version of They Might Be Giants. Perhaps it's just me, but not only is her music sweet and catchy, she's a freckled-face darling. More quirky cute than Zooey, more interesting than pretty much any American pop singer. If you don't know her, you might want to check into her.
