C'mon People: Drop This Kristen Stewart Nonsense!

08.24.2012by: Droz

The three ring circus of scandal, conjecture and hype surrounding celebrity break ups is probably the lowest of the media's many ways of lowering itself into the gutter. The more intense or heated the split and it's messy details become, the more salacious the reporting. Take the flurry of reports detailing all the rumor and speculation surrounding the affairs and break up of Kristen Stewart and her former fiance, Robert Pattinson. Whatever they do is breaking news, now that she's notorious and he's the tragic victim. Pattinson goes on the Daily Show and gives them their best ratings ever and Kristen's upcoming appearance at the Toronto film festival is being anticipated like Oswald's perp walk.

I'm not going to condemn philanderers or exalt the faithful. Placed in the right circumstances, any one of us could quite easily find ourselves in the same situation as these people. But that kind of rational response doesn't sell magazines or draw visitors to your site. The media wants to see people take sides in something that should be a private issue. Stewart and her lover are being characterized as Judases and victimized Pattinson made the new sparkly vampire Christ. All resulting from the testimony of the notoriously unreliable word of "insiders," whose unconfirmed reports are treated like facts. Is this really worth becoming the focus of a fully armed and operational internet media battle station? Why isn't this being lost amidst all the much more important issues we face?

It's not like celebrity extracurricular activity is anything new. Folks have been messing around in Hollywood since the beginning. Stars, movie makers and other industry types intermingle with one another like rain drops in a puddle. They actually get paid for it. Some of the most legendary couplings in Hollywood history have come out of this kind of backdoor dealing. Can you really blame them? You got the most beautiful people in the world doing love scenes with each other, spending hours together on set, sharing emotional exchanges full of vulnerability and intense emotion. It would be strange if shit didn't go down in those kinds of circumstances. Then again, some celebs are just inclined to move from person to person, basically because they can get away with it.

Clearly there are other factors involved in this particular scandal to take it from just another Hollywood infidelity to the scourge of humanity. I will say that at least some of this, Stewart brought on herself, thanks to a rather remarkable display of indiscretion. In a world where one's deeds can go from private to worldwide in seconds, her perplexing choice to literally do it in the road, in full view of a number of paparazzi, was both stupid and rather unprecedented, as far as celebrity trysts go. Most celebs seem to have at least some understanding of the need for secrecy in their sideline dealings. Another rather stupid thing she's done to inflame this is her appalling lack of tact in using Twitter, of all things, to issue an apology to her fiance, in defiance of their oft stated desire for privacy. So basically, she's guilty of being really bad at fooling around and also fairly inept in her attempts to smooth things over. Does that make her deserving of a public lynching? I don't think so.

Probably the most important factor in this is the hype churned up amidst the court of public opinion is the discontent of twihards. The frenzied outrage this indiscretion prompted from the massive TWILIGHT fanbase was something akin to Christian fundamentalists letting out of a passion play, and is a big reason the story gets as much play in the press as it does. Suddenly every "twihard" in the world has their pitchforks and torches at the ready, waiting for the next tidbit of info, which the media quite readily hands out to them. You got millions of screaming schoolgirls and housewives, all living in their little Bella and Edward fantasy world, suddenly brought crashing back down to Earth and the realization that their blood sucking romantic leads are actually flawed human beings. Or worse, twihards holding to their fantasies by twisting reality and fantasy into one, channeling their jealousy of Bella into their anger over what the actress who plays her has done.

So this what's so important? Ravenous packs of tabloid "journalists" smelling blood in the water, a not-so-smart kid who got caught with her hand in the cookie jar, and a lunatic fanbase looking for payback. This is why the next few months lead up to the next TWILIGHT movie premiere are going to be chock full of Stewart/Pattinson drama? Are they gonna have Obama and Romney debate the issue? Should we preempt breaking news from Syria when these two attend the premiere? Because a couple of famous kids, who had no chance of becoming lifelong partners anyway, gave in to their sex drive and got their hearts broken. Utter nonsense, better suited to middle school rumor mills than national media attention. But, hopefully you can learn to get something out of such schoolyard gossip, because we're probably going to get a lot more like it in years to come.

Yep

From the get go, this relationship felt more like a publicity stunt than a real romance, so it's silly to get offended by it. The cheating husband is basically the douche here.

Agreed...

Given, the girl made a mistake... She cheated, and inadvertently broke up the teenybopper generation's "Brangelina." But why should she be taking so much heat for this? Is it all the love for Robert Pattinson? Yeah, he seems like a nice guy, and I suppose after the last few films of his I watched (Cosmopolis & Remember Me), he's not completely untalented. I don't condone cheating in any fashion, but shouldn't the director be the one under fire here? He's an older, attractive, MARRIED

He's an older, attractive, MARRIED FATHER who was in a position of power over her as a director. Now, I don't know who it was crossed the line first, or if they're attraction was instantly mutual, but he was the one who was married and had children. She may have been in a committed relationship, but she's still young and stupid. People make mistakes. Didn't Susan Sarandon cheat on Tim Robbins with a younger man after being together for like 20 years? She didn't catch this much heat for that. Brad Pitt may have gotten heat for breaking Aniston's heart, but it seemed like most people just went "Eh, who could blame him." That didn't have much of a negative effect on his career, and I don't remember him being painted the villain quite as much as they're making her out to be. I think people need to have a little more perspective and realize that at her age, with her looks, and as big of a name as she's become, she's going to be the object of more than a few men's infatuations. I know it's no excuse, but I think she's entitled to make a few mistakes... And I'm not counting those freakin' Twilight movies... Yeah, they may be god awful, but she made a f**k ton of money, and a name for herself. If she can prove herself as an actor and pick up more roles like "The Runaways" and "Welcome to the Rileys," she may cement herself in Hollywood. Let's not burn her at the stake for her personal indiscretions, and give her a chance to show what she can do.

On a side note, I think the studio pulling her from Snow White & The Huntsman 2 was a major mistake... The first movie wouldn't have been as popular as it was if her name wasn't attached. The movie might have been visually impressive, but as movies go, it was mediocre at best. Maybe Thor can carry a sequel by himself, maybe not, but scrapping her to keep the marginally talented adulterer behind the camera isn't good business. If they're so worried about a name on the poster being bad publicity, why the hell would you keep him on?

Is it really the Twihards?

Maybe it's the websites I visit but I have the feeling things got this big because a lot of people making a fuss about it are people that hate her and are happy that she's punished for the movies she made. The Twilight passion goes both ways, and it's not smart on any side.

I don't support anyone cheating, but the reaction of people who are no way involved is stupefying. Kristen is a human being, even if she is a celeb. We have all made decisions that have affected someone negatively, but we cannot ask for vengeance on these issues. She is entitled to be at peace and her and Robert to deal with this at their own decisions.

Twilight fans are fanatical, but most of the people who started reading the books were very young and thought this book was what love

Yes to this article. I just don't care about a celeb's sex life (although I'm still waiting for Chris Colfer to call me...). All I care about is their talent. No one looks at Brad Pitt and goes "Oh my gosh! He cheated on Jennifer...BURN HIM!" Why? Because his sex life doesn't matter to his talent. Yeah, Kristen cheated. Does that make her a bad actress? No. I mean she isn't great, but I think she is alright at what she does...sometimes. This just makes her a bitch.

Twihards are taking this way to hard. It's scary. This happened around the same time as the movie theatre massacre and I was seeing videos of girls crying over Kristen cheating on Edward. It was like THIS was the worst thing that could ever happen to them. Someone should tell them, they aren't part of the relationship.

I don't care about her relationships, I already didn't like her because she's a crap actress.
That being said, these Twihards are taking it too hard.

I haven't really noticed the whole 'public lynching' thing. The people who get passionate about this argument do seem to be the kind of people that would spend money on Celeb mags and such, other than the Will Ferrell thing (and I assume he doesn't actually care), I haven't heard much else on this story from the actual news/intelligent reporters/members of the public.

Also I can't help but think that the article slightly glosses over infidelity here. Yes they are young but hardly a "couple

Also I can't help but think that the article slightly glosses over infidelity here. Yes they are young but hardly a "couple of kids" who wouldn't know that cheating is harmful. The whole "I gave into my sex drive" thing is another way for people who cheat to make what they do seem normal rather than hurtful. Aside from that, I agree with this, fuck the media.

If you mess up, you are open to criticism by those who care about your goings on. For most people, that is a small-ish number... but I still signed that social contract by being a social being. She, however, has a much bigger circle of people who care, so she is open to that level of criticism just like I am with my circle.

We live in a society where celebrities are called heroes and geniuses for absolutely no good reason. If they enter a domain where they can be praised for nothing, it only

We live in a society where celebrities are called heroes and geniuses for absolutely no good reason. If they enter a domain where they can be praised for nothing, it only seems fair they are open to be vilified for no good reason too.

So we can give them attention for what they're wearing and what they named their dog, but we have to leave them alone when they do something with actual repercussions? Seems backward.

All's fair. I personally don't care about who is doing whom, but I am not naive enough to claim we should be able to pick and choose when celebrities get undue attention.

Let me see...

It's not so much that she cheated... but she cheated with a married man who had kids. She potentially destroyed a family and ruined the kids' life. She's a whore and she is getting what she deserves.

am I the only one who remembers she slept with a married man, and thus (the two of them) ruined a potential multi-hundred million dollar franchise in SWATH?

Fuck her...Fuck him...and Fuck Rob Pattinson...They should all be blacklisted in Hollywood
