Did Jessica Alba contribute to nudity in films resembling a video game cutscene?

Oct. 20, 2010by: Lester Diamond
Their is an interesting article over at SlashFilm in regards to the digital stripping of Jessica Alba in MACHETE. I was unaware of the fact that during her nude shower scene (which was from a obscured angle) she actually wasn't nude at all. The effect was done using the magic of CGI. Now my theory is that director Robert Rodriguez caught a lot of flak for casting Alba as the only stripper in SIN CITY who never strips (or at least attempting to get her tipsy on the day of the shoot). In real life that movie would've ended when the patrons rioted for not getting what they paid for (I've seen worse happen at $2 Tuesday nights). So to atone for his sins, he turned to his computer to have Jessica play ball for MACHETE. The results were convincing, but did we just open Pandora's box? We are a generation raised on CGI at the theaters, as well as during countless exposition moments in video games cutscenes. Is CGI nudity a natural progression of the art, or does it cheapen something in it's use?

These are questions left to wiser, more sober minds, so please feel free to discuss amongst yourselves. I've included a picture of the before/after CGI stripping below.

Extra Tidbit: I find it funny Alba is reluctant to get naked in B-movies, but gets naked and SEVERELY beaten in THE KILLER INSIDE ME. I guess art films don't count though, right?

I can respect if an actress

doesn't want to get naked for a flick. Sure it's nice to see their bits, but I doubt anyone here would be willing to expose their junk onscreen. The worrying thing for me is if directors use CGI to make Jennifer Aniston look younger for a crappy romcom, or slim down Cristina Hendricks' luscious figure. That would suck

If it's as publicized as this thing was, then CGI "nudifying" is going to piss people off. You want to keep that secret, or at least don't publicize it. Preserve the illusion. Sort of what Playboy has done for the last 50 years or so with their naked women.

Well, that was disappointing.

It just validates my opinion of her. She's a hot prude. It's a damn shame because her goods are definitely great for a look-see. Now I'm doubting she even did partial nudity in "The killer inside me" or any future project of hers claiming to showcase her nude.

WELL...

...for me, at least, it takes away from the impact of a scene, knowing that its all been shopped or faked... something simple like a nude scene draws its power from the fact that we are being allowed into an area of somebody's life thats usually intimate and private-- an artist revealing their body as part of the art that they are creating, even if its a commercial piece of art like a popular film. However, an artist once told me that you simply have to do whatever you have to do to get the

However, an artist once told me that you simply have to do whatever you have to do to get the final result you're looking for-- so if the film maker has to resort to using CG to get the desired affect in a scene, then thats whats gotta happen. Even saying this, I do realize that "nothing" about the movie in question is actually "REAL" anyways... all the guns are shooting blanks and all the actors have stuntmen-- and the whole story was made up on a sheet of paper, so I can accept this use of CG as just another tool to get something on film that simply doesnt exist in real life-

I still get a little ticked off when Alba goes on interviews and makes up these round about excuses about integrity and not doing nudity and sort of getting on a soap box about what she will and will not do-- sometimes people should just say "I just dont wanna" --Im cool with that and makes more sense to me than talking in circles about how you were raised religiously or some other high minded excuse to just turn around and have a nude scene anyway, just with the use of CG and then turn around and act like you werent part of it-- that somehow you arent to blame since somebody ELSE digitally took your clothes off.

I'd pick neither of your choices. I prefer What Bma said below, the actress admit she didn't want to do the nude scene. The film-maker should do the honest decision, either change the original scene to exclude nudity or use an actress who is willing to do the scene as originally written.
