Please to enjoy this promo pic of Ellen Page dressed in her super hero garb in the upcoming SUPER, about a couple of regular people who decide to become not-so-super heroes. The trailers and previews for SUPER seem to be hinting at a pretty funny and fun movie, though my man Mike Sampson didn't think much of it after a screening at this year's SXSW.
I'll reserve judgment until I get to the theater myself, though I will say that I'm totally on board with the concept of home brew super heroes, a la KICK ASS, which this movie seems to resemble. I like the idea of Rainn Wilson as the unlikely hero more than the goofy guy they picked to play Kick Ass, but I can't really see Ellen Page being a match for Chloe Moretz as Hit Girl - which was, in my opinion, the most entertaining character of all last year. I just love little kids with potty mouths.
I've been on and off the Ellen Page bandwagon in the course of her relatively short career. I enjoyed her performance in HARD CANDY, thoroughly detested everything about JUNO, found her sweet and likable in WHIP IT, then mostly forgettable in INCEPTION. So we've certainly had an ups and downs. From the trailers and clips of SUPER, she seems to be entertaining enough as the sidekick, so maybe Ellen and I can be friends again with this one. We'll have to see about that when SUPER opens nationwide next week.
