Get Real: Does a celebrity endorsement affect the way you vote?

Aug. 27, 2012by: Cherry Liquor
Natalie Portman, an Oscar-winning actress who was born in Jerusalem, Israel and raised on the East coast of the U.S. (from Washington D.C. to New York state), was in Nevada over the weekend for the Obama for America Nevada Women Vote Summit (held in Las Vegas, specifically), and talked to an audience of over 400 women (all of whom I'm guessing are rich enough to afford to be able to attend the event) and spoke for over 10 minutes about the positive work that she's seen President Obama do for the nation and women/women's rights in particular. This is nice and all, and quite frankly, after being raised by a couple of hippie liberals, I suppose I should be rendering Portman a valiant voice in the society of politics. But I'm not. Listening to a famous person, graduate of Harvard or not, shouldn't be a deciding factor in what your political stances are. It's great to see Nat dressed up and looking wonderful as always, but I ask... what impact does this have, if any, on how you feel about the upcoming elections?

People tend to forget that actors are people to sometimes and that their opinion counts. I like it when I get the point of view of a actor or actress on politics or anything else as long as they know what the hell they're talking about. Do they decide votes? Probably not but they're a great way to inform people on various topics that may need to be heard by the general public that other wise would go unheard of.

Not at all...

I really don't care which way celebrities fall in terms of politics. I like Bruce Willis (for the most part), but the fact that he's a Republican doesn't make me want to vote Republican... Nor does the fact that Portman is a Democrat make me want to vote Democrat. I think you should know the facts, know the issues, and know what you want out of this country... And most importantly, do your own research. Don't listen to bulls**t TV ads or watch news outlets that are skewed one way or

That being said, it's nice to see celebrities who actually care about the issues. I have lost all respect for Jenna Jameson, not that I had much to begin with, when she said "I'm rich, and when you're rich, you wan't a Republican in the white house."

It's not the speaker, it's the arguments

Celebrities are good to publicize a cause/point of view. They can raise the awareness of people who might not be interested in politics and in that regards, they can be a good entry point.

But that's all they are, an entry point. Those people have to use that awareness to get more informations and make their own mind.

Hell no

If you rely on a celebrity for you to make political choices, then you're priorities are screwed up.

It doesn't affect me at all. I love Natalie Portman but she's going to be extravagantly wealthy whether Obama is POTUS or Romney is POTUS. Her opinion doesn't mean jack-shit to me.

It makes no sense for her to support him since she was born in Jerusalem, Israel because Obama has said that he wants to go back to the 67 borders.....That's so weird because in 08 when he spoke to the AIPAC, American Israel Public Affairs Committee, and said, ".......Jerusalem will remain the capital of Israel and it must remain undivided.....He was ONLY saying that to get the Jewish vote because he said differently after he became President. Obama and Romney are both corrupt.

I agree, It really sucks when you have two Presidents that are both corrupt and they expect to pick one.
Its like picking a form of personal torture.

REPUBLICAN SCUM

No person should influence anyone's vote, however, it doesn't hurt to put a pretty face along with a good cause as long as she has a brain and Ms. Portman impresses me as one who does. Basically I do not see how any woman or minority can be Republican. Basically I see modern day Republicans as greedy, mysoginistic bigots who've lost touch with modern issues. Their methods are design to keep everyone down who isn't a white male who makes $250k a year. It;s a shame because the greatest

It;s a shame because the greatest Republican was Abraham Lincoln and not the guy who funded the Taliban and Bin Laden in the 80's. Therefore, anyone with half a brain knows to run the other way and vote for someone other than a Republican.
