Hollywood Gossip | Hot or Not: Anne Heche

I tend to plot out who I'm going to feature in Hot or Not weeks in advance so I don't have to do any heavy thinking. With the push of the release date for RAMPART pushed to mid-February, my choice of babe this week might seem random. Then again, this week's selection is a fairly random lady in real life, so it all works.

When Heche first came into my line of recognition, she was the crazy girlfriend of Ellen Degeneres, co-star to Harrison Ford in SIX DAYS, SEVEN NIGHTS and Tommy Lee Jones in VOLCANO and pretty much represented the grungy, short-haired hipster quality of the mid-'90's. That was before she ditched Ellen, ditched being a lesbian (I fell in love with the person, not the gender!) and was found wandering around dehydrated and referring to herself as an alien from another world. Which is amusing since apparently Heche got her start in 1987 on the soap opera, "Another World." The life story that she claims happened to her as she was growing up is a random, crazy, harrowing one indeed.

Back in the day, I never got the appeal of Heche. I thought she was riding on the coattails of the "openly out" momentum that was going on at the time and people cast her more because she was a sensation than for her looks or talent. Hell, her co-star in RAMPART, Robin Wright, was a better looking, more talented version of essentially the same person. Right? Benign white lady with blonde hair and minimal sexiness who can look/play smart and/or motherly?

But Heche has been reconstructing her image for the last decade plus, hoping to distance herself from the past that haunts her. She's got a bangin' body for a 42-year old who's had a couple of kids. Plastic surgery (I'm guessing) is helping to keep most of everything impervious to gravity. And by grabbing roles in movies like SPREAD and CEDAR RAPIDS, where she was cast as a cougar-aged sex symbol, has made me think twice. Bothering to read about her purported background has made me think twice about all the sensational other sides to her story. Hot? Sure, why not?
