Hot or Not: Cate Blanchett

Most of the time, when it comes to an actress who's been around for a good amount of time in Hollywood, I've learned to steer clear of covering them in the Hot or Not debate. If they've been around long enough, clearly they're doing something right in order to keep getting work. As much as I'd like to believe that Hollywood is the land of the fair and that acting talent trumps all, this just isn't the case. But what happens when you have someone who's incredibly talented and there's no argument about that but perhaps her looks are borderline? Is she hotter because she can act? That's the question this week.

Cate Blanchett

The thing about Cate Blanchett which strikes me as odd is that I've never really stopped to ponder if she's a hot woman or not. I've never caught myself saying out loud, "Damn, she sure is pretty," when watching one of her movies. No, I'm usually so caught up in the movie she's in because she's playing the role so well that I forget to consider what she looks like as a woman. It's kind of like having that best male friend that us chicks have where we've stopped thinking about them sexually because we like them so much. (Sorry to those guys, I know you never stop thinking that there might be a shot in the dark with us.)

I think I ended up watching ELIZABETH with my mom because she was an English teacher who majored in English Lit and that time period was what gave her the literary fem-chub. I think I've watched more about King Henry VIII than any normal human being should. So I didn't even register that Cate was in the movie other than to note how good she was in it. I even watched her in PUSHING TIN and AN IDEAL HUSBAND and she didn't click with me personally until I watched her in THE GIFT, but she probably has Katie Holmes' tits to thank for that.

Now that Cate is a part of Hollywood royalty, with 5 Oscar nominations and her win for Best Supporting Actress for playing Katharine Hepburn in THE AVIATOR, I have no choice but to recognize that she's a woman, she's often very lovely but I still don't always think of her that way when watching her act. With ROBIN HOOD opening up this weekend and me most likely skipping it until it comes out on DVD (sorry Cate, blame Crowe and oversaturation of the subject matter for my lack of interest in that one), I might have to revisit my thoughts on Cate again and again in the future. I find her to be pretty in a British kind of way. Somewhat classic, somewhat non-traditional, if that makes any sense. Hot... well, who cares when she can act, right?

Very conflicted on this one

Cate is an excellent actress and deserves all the success she's had. That said, I have absolutely no desire to bend her over a desk. And yes, she is too damn skinny.

You're asking if she's hotter because she can act. In her case, it might work both ways.

The reason for her success is that she's pretty enough to play a beautiful woman (unlike, say, Tilda Swinton)but she's not so pretty that she can't play anything other than a beautiful woman (like Jennifer Connelly, for example).

In movies like The Shipping News, Bandits and Notes on a Scandal, she was given parts that were more sexualized and she was genuinely hot in those films.

I find her quite attractive, in some movies she doesn't look so great. She looked amazing in Bandits for example, but I didn't like how she looked in LOTR, but overall when she's out and about (awards, shows etc) she's pretty hot.

seeing her on the red carpet, you know she's beautiful, yet she is attracted to role that mostly portray her in a negative light and unflattering. some say she 'uglies' down for her roles but there are gems out there where she truly shines. i think she's stunning.
