PLEASE: IF YOU PLAN ON JUST BEING DEMEANING, AT LEAST TRY TO MAKE YOUR COMMENTS CLEVER OR WITTY. THANK YOU. There are a lot of people talking about this week's Hot or Not girl this week and while I go into this column knowing that the majority of you are going to talk shit, I want to feature her because the show that she wrote, developed and sold just finished its second season with a ratings high. And got green-lit for a third seasons with an expanded 12 episodes. Factor that in while you decide. Or not.
Never did watch Dunham's buzz-worthy TINY FURNITURE indie flick that she wrote, directed, starred in and garnered so much attention from the people who matter (and by some miracle didn't happen to give a shit what she looked like or try to coerce her into losing weight or cleaning up her frump) that it opened the doors that have lead to her success with the HBO phenom show, "Girls."
I hate the weak argument that people give about how they don't think that "Girls" sucks because Dunham isn't a supermodel, or a fat chick or a frumpy chick by saying that the show just isn't funny. I can accept the statement, "The show isn't funny TO ME." But "Girls" is weird and honest and surreal and annoying and brilliant and eye-opening, and that's what makes it great. Just as Lena's Hollywood-unworthy beauty isn't perfect but raw and real and normal and what most guys know the majority of women who aren't on TV look like. She doesn't hate on men, either. The male characters are fleshed out extremely well, especially Adam, a guy I've known far too many times in my life. The scripts depict him as SHE perceives him to be - in her insecure, 20-something way. The truth is he is who he is, just as strange and imperfect and raw and honest as any of the females on the show. Don't like the truth of men mirrored back at ya, guys? TOUGH SHIT.
It's hard for me to sit here and tell you that I think Lena Dunham is hot in the aesthetic sense. She's not. She is pretty and she has a face that intrigues. A face that explains without speaking that this is a woman that you want to know. She oozes the pheromone that makes you wonder, "I don't know what it is about that girl, but..." And in its own sense, that's hot as hell.
What do you think of Lena Dunham?
