I don't watch much television but when I do, it's with a near religious fervor. Right now I'm trapped in the gravitational pull of "Lost," not always because I like the show but because I have a voracious need to finish what I've started. While watching, I've decided that Sawyer was partly modeled after Han Solo and partly after Matthew McConaughey, whose new movie THE LINCOLN LAWYER is opening this weekend and also stars one of the actresses from one of the few TV shows I watch because I love, not because I feel pop culture is compelling me to so that I don't miss any trivia questions. Let's dissect her this week, OK?
Angela Montenegro isn't the most popular character on television. Most of the time when I sing Conlin's praises for playing the forensic artist with a hippie heart of gold and the tech skills 13-year old boys cream their jeans over, I'm told she's shrill and annoying. I've never found her to be such, drawn to that warmth and hard to pin down quality, drawn partly from her mixed race looks and partly from the character's ability to waffle between being gratingly naive and reassuringly life lesson savvy.
The thing that sucks about Angela is that she's the extent of my experience with Conlin's work as an actress. While her resume reads that she had a role in ENCHANTED, good luck if you'll ever get me to overlook the fabulousness that were Amy Adams' and James Marsden's performances to find it. Michaela got her start in film with a role in LOVE, THE HARD WAY playing a lover of Adrien Brody's, which sorta makes me want to watch that movie if only because Brody's nose compels me to.
With a small role in THE LINCOLN LAWYER as a detective, it appears that - at least for now - Conlin isn't straying far from her money making genre. Maybe it's her mixed origin which keeps her from landing more roles, causing confusion because she doesn't look Chinese enough to pull off the ethnic stereotypes but she's not white enough to play the lead's love interest. Most of my perspective might be based on lust for a character rather than the actress, but I think that Conlin is sex on a stick and needs more exposure. So hey! That's what I'm giving her.
What do you think of Michael Conlin?
