I like surprises. I highly doubt that anything that goes on in THE FIVE YEAR ENGAGEMENT will be much of a surprise, considering that the non-stop ads have given away most of the "jokes" by now. But it got me to thinking about this week's Hot or Not selection and the surprise that can be found.
Remember 40-YEAR OLD VIRGIN? Of course you do. It helped to revitalize the R-rated comedy back when the genre had lost steam and gave license for Judd Apatow and the Frat-Pack to get any little whim of theirs greenlit. Which so far hasn't been a terrible thing. The movie shone on Paul Rudd's ability to be so diverse and do a job so sincerely that by the time that you've gotten to the speed-dating portion of the movie, the fact that dark-skinned Indian Mindy Kaling is the Amy that he's been pining over, you're stunned and a little embarrassed with yourself. I love those sort of surprises.
Don't hate me, or well... hate me if you must. But since "Friends," I haven't had much interest in the comedies that NBC has churned out. So I don't have a lot of experience with "The Office." But I love that Kaling was a writer, producer and director for many of the popular episodes. That as much attention she is recently receiving for her moments in front of the camera, she's been working her ass off behind it as well.
I'm voting hot on Kaling because she's got a personality and intellect that cannot be denied. She is quickly funny and a constant surprise. She refuses to get stuck in stereotypical roles for Indian women. Watching her talk smack to Natalie Portman in NO STRINGS ATTACHED was one of my favorite parts of that movie. Physically, you could tear her apart on the hotness scale. But after seeing what she can do and reading a small article where she dedicated a memo to her 12-year old self, explaining that all the kids in school who teased her for her looks would be calling and begging her for attention when she was work for "The Office" would pay off in emotional spades? Well, that's fucking sexy. Kudos, Kaling. Kudos.
What do you think of Mindy Kaling?
