You'll have to forgive me if I don't bother with hating on Tyler Perry movies like so many are consumed with doing. The man has his thang and he works it and it sells. End of story. However, I have a really, really hard time supporting Stephenie Meyer. You can smell just how much they're trying to sever the connection of THE HOST from the TWILIGHT series, betting on bringing in some sci-fi fans who would rather opt out of the movie simply because sparkling vampires made them retch. Not to mention they went to the lengths possible to hire one of the most respectable young actresses working today and our week's Hot or Not selection.
In less than a month, Ronan is going to flip her calendar to her 19th year and somehow we missed the big-hoopla over broadcasting that she'd turned 18 last year. Might have something to do with the fact that she's been participating in high level dramas from such an early age, gaining major notice and acclaim for 2007's ATONEMENT where she was the seventh youngest actress to earn an Academy Award nomination (she was 13 at the time). Oh, and in case you're stumbling, her name is Irish and pronounced "seer-sha" there but she pronounces it "sur-shuh" while doing press in the US.
Born in New York, raised in Ireland, Saoirse's father is an established Irish actor, so it might be in the genes. I can't tell which parent it was she got her looks from, with the piercing blue eyes that droop ever-so-slightly on the outside corners, the lips which are poised for hesitant smiles. While the looks are there, I'm a diehard fan of the book The Lovely Bones and the movie was so mutilated from its original, tragic, depressing form that I hate that Ronan was involved in it.
That feeling carries over when I think about her starring in a movie written by the woman who wrote the TWILIGHT books. I've read those books and they suck. They are putrid literature, barely qualifying to be called literature at all. I have not read The Host. But by association, who's to say that this won't taint Ronan's subtle, non-Hollywood vibe? She's already looking distortedly uncomfortable during premieres and press events for the film. Hot might be fleeting here. In another year or two, will she be saddled with the abbreviated name SRo and mocked like that other Meyers' victim?
What do you think of Saoirse Ronan?
