Some weeks I pick chicks that most of you haven't heard of, trying to test the waters for who may or may not be the next big fanboy obsession. Other weeks I pick old favorites who might have fallen from previous thresholds (or perhaps were never too high to begin with) to figure out if you're paying as close attention as the mid-westerners reading People magazine. Some weeks you just look at the name of the chick and comment that I've picked a no-brainer, which is what I'm assuming will happen this go-around. I have a purpose for asking this week, even if the end result will be easy. The question is really whether or not it will be read and comprehended.
I have earned my fangirl stripes by being one of the limited number of people who jumped on the "Firefly" train when it first aired, don't misunderstand that for a second. I might not have intended to be as interested in River Tam as I ended up being, originally believing that I was going to have endless seasons to ogle Fillion's ass in those pants (oh, Captain Mal!). I caught onto the Summer Glau fascination thing as early as the rest of the fans did. And I definitely rooted out that this chick was different, special, unique, all by herself, above and beyond the scope of that character.
With the release of FIREFLY, it was nice to slip back into that group of people, even if I felt as if I'd missed Glau after the show was so rudely canceled. While I carved out time to catch the latest and greatest from Whedon, it never occurred to me that I was going to have to follow this chick around to continue to see her. With small roles in many shows, from "The Unit" to "The 4400," Summer hasn't really left the small screen. But she's never really gained a strong foothold either.
So I ask, knowing that the majority of you who tune in for this column will simply post the "Duh, of course she's hot" remarks, to the few who let their eyeballs drift through this haze of words, why is it that Glau is such a fanboy icon? Sure, she's different looking, pretty in an exotic way, believably tough and sporty despite the fact that she looks break-ably thin. She has a voice which doesn't match that badass within and a resume that doesn't look as if it should support the weight of the love that is showered upon her. In this fickle and unforgiving Hollywood world, why is Summer Glau the high priestess of all that is good and hot?
Oh, and do you personally find Summer Glau hot?
