I've said it before and I'll say it again... a woman who can act is fr more attractive to me as an actress than just any chick who's been put on screen and told to pout and posture. There's not nearly enough color in Hollywood either, so it's always a treasure when a shining star breaks through and becomes accessible to any audience without losing their identity. So let's look at this week's Hot or Not selection and evaluate, shall we?
Taraji P. Henson
She was the haggard hooker who couldn't bring money into the homestead in HUSTLE & FLOW, bringing people to the edges of their seats as she found her soul, singing with heart-wrenching depth and great pools of hope in her eyes. Henson had me right then and there, probably causing me to be a fan for life just for the role of Shug.
A single mother who will be turning 40 on September 11th of this year, Henson originally wasn't interested in being an actress, starting her educational career at North Carolina Agriculture & Tech to be an electrical engineer. Failing Pre-Calculus stunted that career arc and while Taraji eventually finished college, she did have to hold a couple of jobs to do so, including a night job where she was a singing waitress. It was nearly 10 years after graduating from college that she had her break-through role as Shug and she's continued with roles in SMOKIN' ACES, an Oscar-nominated turn in THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON, as well as becoming a regular in Tyler Perry's world of African-American slanted fare.
Now she's taking on the role of the mom in THE KARATE KID
, a loose remake from the 1984 original. But that's just one of the four projects that she has coming up, including a role in next year's LARRY CROWNE, directed by and starring Tom Hanks. While I've talked mostly about her life and career, I have to simply state that there is a casual, contemporary and sensationally low-key sexiness that Taraji exudes which makes her one hot mama in my book.
But what do you think? Taraji P. Henson... hot or not?
