Forgive me for being even less witty than most of you already find me to be, I'm still a bit gut-punched by the Robin Williams news from yesterday. For me, the greatest movie of his is THE FISHER KING, a dark and bit twisted tale from Terry Gilliam that represented the true beauty of love, both romantic and friendship-wise. That made me think of the the current limited release movie WHAT IF and its leading lady, the feature of this week's Hot or Not column.
While our own Chris Bumbray might have given WHAT IF a largely glowing review when it debuted under the title THE F WORD at the Toronto International Film Festival, most critics are panning the movie, calling it derivative and lackluster. That doesn't mean that they're not praising Kazan, who takes on her modern day version of a Meg Ryan rom-com best female friend character.
Acting doesn't seem to be an issue with Zoe, who you should totally check out in RUBY SPARKS, where she's conjured up as the perfect hipster/budding auteur girlfriend for Paul Dano's neurotic wunderkind writer character. Kazan's quite incredible at being 'that girl,' the one that Zooey Deschanel is really too pretty to be and still represent a realistic ideal fangirl girlfriend type. (I can't wait to see her in THE PRETTY ONE, even if it's because Jake Johnson is in it.)
Ultimately, I like Zoe Kazan a lot. She's spunky and perky and different. She's wildly cute and doesn't strike the same chords that so many other actresses do right now, even the hipster ones. I don't know if I would call her drop-dead hot but she's got that adorable hot vibe to her.
What do you think of Zoe Kazan?
