After this upcoming weekend, we'll know if Lizzy Caplan's ultimate role - that of Virginia Johnson on the Showtime series "Masters of Sex" - will pay off. Caplan is nominated for an Emmy as a lead actress in a dramatic role, something that seems astounding to the actress after years of rejection for lesser work.
"Doing a dramatic role was something that I could see myself doing on a very small scale - independent films - but on a large scale, on a show that people actually seem to watch? It’s completely shocking to me," Lizzy told LA Confidential magazine, where she's featured in a splashy, noir-themed photoshoot.
"I’ve always felt like the underdog - partly because I’ve been told that I’m the underdog, pretty explicitly, on many occasions,” she said, talking about her earlier years auditioning for various WB sitcoms alongside equally underdoggish actress buddy, Lindsay Sloane.
I gotta say, Caplan has a lot of pull as to whether or not I'll consider watching something. A great example is her upcoming role in the Franco-Rogan bromance, THE INTERVIEW, a film that I undoubtedly would've completely ignored if not for seeing Lizzy in the trailer. If it means I'm an underdog too, I'm good with that. It puts me in excellent company.
